  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mass is too long

You know, the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the time of the Mass, ranging from 40-50minutes is too long. It isn't practical and sends most people who would go to Mass straight to do other things with their time.

The average couple works 40-50 hours a week and due to economical restrictions, they are forced to work almost 6 days a week between work and household chores. Unfortunately, if they have kids, they never get anytime to themselves or enough shopping time and this creates stress in their lives. So there is never any consideration to attending Mass.

I believe the solution is to have a Fast-Mass. This would ensure attendance and possibly even boost the finances of each individual parish. Let's get real. People need quick graces and don't have time or care for meditation, prayer life and an immersion into Church history, philosophy and theology.

The Fast Mass would work on a large scale remodeling project. Masses would be shortened by 15 minutes with the removal of the homily (who wants to be preached to, right?) and inbetween Masses, a drive through Eucharist window would be applicable. Here's how it works:

You drive up to a speaker where the voice of a priest hears your confession. Now you are in a State of Grace. That was easy, huh? No work on your part!

Next, you drive up to a window similar to the ones at McDonald's (let's make it easy on you since you don't want to think) where the hands of a priest come out and provide the Eucharist! And then you drive away! Imagine that! Now you can go continue your shopping!

Gone are the legalisms of a Church that needs to be more like the first century. And how long was the Mass back then? Who cares and who knows! But it couldn't have been this long! (and forget the Mass before the Novus Ordo...talk about 90 minutes or more!)

This, IMO will solve all the problems!

(note: I hope you know I'm joking)

Acts 20:9 (RSV) And a young man named Eu'tychus was sitting in the window. He sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer; and being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.

So technically, by Biblical standards, we need at least one person to fall asleep, slip out a window and die for Mass to be valid. ;)

That was great. :D Sadly, so many people believe that....

My confirmation classes (three plus years ago) was like this. There was a really good looking guy (I didn't *like* him, but I thought he was a very good looking guy...) a couple years older than I am in the class.... One day during a discussion he said he thought Mass was too long. He said we could ditch the music, the collection (box on the way out), and Mass would be a lot quicker.... I have so many regrets from that for having not spoken up and saying something... :(

168 hours in a week and people feel like 1/168 of that is too much.... the world is not doing so well... :p

Thanks for the laugh though. :D

PP, you seriously almost scandalized me with that post. "Who are you, and what have you done with PP?" was my immediate question. But with that resolved, now you're all being silly. Shame on you.

... well, unless you're gonna include some cheese curds and a hot fudge sundae with my order.

I'm not Catholic, but can relate to some of this. The service gets really longer when I'm hungry. It isn't that I don't want to be at the service, I really do, and it feeds my poor spirit at times. It is just the hunger comes upon me in the middle of the sermon, and I try my best to ignore it, even praying it goes away. (Of course, this is worse if I've had no breakfast, so I do try to have something to eat before I leave for church.) Some sermons are so wonderful, I don't want them to end! I just wish the hunger wouldn't get in the way...and chewing gum makes it worse.

PP, I also almost freaked out when I started reading your post. And I'm trying to avoid having to start taking blood pressure medications! :D
The Mass I attend ranges from 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 minutes pending on how long Fr. Tim (our pastor and celebrator) wants his homily to be. They range from 15 to 30 minutes long. Do I mind? Not really, unless he starts getting redundant. I think one day I'm going to take notes during the homily so I don't stop paying attention.
I do get really upset when people say Mass is too long. Ask them what they want taken out and they just shrug. :( I like to think (idealogically) that if people realized what was actually happening during Mass, that they would be BEGGING to go more often.
If we got rid of Scripture, it would be significantly shorter, but then we'd REALLY get blasted for "not using the Bible".
