  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have yet to play Mass Effect, but I do have Grand Theft Auto 4 (please don't hate me). Though there is sex in it, it's primarily off screen, and you can choose to go in a girls house or not.

Back to the question, in my opinion it's ok as long as they don't show too much or if you lust over the scene. I'm not really bothered by it.

I like the Mass Effect games a lot, but I'm actually pretty disappointed with the romance subplot. I remember playing the first game and, I don't know what I was expecting, but after all those conversations your reward was a sex cutscene. I was like, "That's it?" Apparently so. And it's not like the character you choose treats you any different in the missions, or there is any difference in the story. The same goes for Mass Effect 2: I played through the romantic subplot and was once more rewarded with a (somewhat less racy) sex scene. *Sigh* And it's sad, 'cause the romantic options in the sequel were better than in the first game. And in a game where the consequences of the choices you make are one of the biggest rewards in the gameplay, it's sad that one of the most important choices you make does not matter outside of a few seconds of racy CG sexuality.

In general, I tend to shrug my shoulders at the idea of sex in video games. I figure it's a part of life, and it sells, so it's going to be featured in games more and more. I like that the scenes in the Mass Effect games are optional, so if you don't want to have that happen, you don't have to. But the sex scenes in games are probably not going to portray the kind of Biblical sexuality you might want as a Christian. (Commander Shepard does not marry the object of his affection before they do it.) Video games are going to portray sexuality the same way as the rest of secular entertainment, like movies and television. The only difference is the interactivity of games. You decide whether or not to have your virtual character sleep with this virtual person. And, while it is "only a game" and I don't think your virtual choices are necessarily reflective of your heart (otherwise Christians would probably all go the Paragon route, right?), I think you've got to be aware. Just know that this is the voice of the World speaking to you, telling you what is okay in the realm of sexuality. God has a very different opinion.

Also, I have a feeling that this kind of insertion of sex into video games is going to eventually lead to mainstream video games having scenes that are straight up pornography. If the purpose of the game, or scenes in the game, is to appeal to the player's lust, then it's time to go play something else.

The romantic scenes in Dragon Age 2 (and to some degree Dragon Age) were more racy than the scenes in either ME or ME2.

I too was disappointed that there wasn't more to it. Though there's that one scene with your romantic interest from ME confronting you in ME2... but still. Apparently in ME3, you get to/have to choose between the two (assuming your romantic interest from 2 survived of course).

It depends on the intention, in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age these aren't scenes for the sake of sex. They are optional parts of the story that you don't have to do.

If the game is putting sex in for the sake of sex...Well games like that you are NOT going to find at your local Gamestop! They would be rated for adults only.
Still a game can have graphic sex scenes without being immature about it. One game that would do that perfectly is called Katawa Shoujo (although it is really more an interactive novel it is considered a game).

My problem is when a game is NOT about the sex, yet they have a graphic and immature sex scene in it. Why not make a Hentai game if that was your intention? Still I don't worry that there will be 'straight up pronography' in video games. The ESRB is very touchy with its rating system and would more than likely give such a game an AO rating, Adults Only, not allowing it to be sold in stores like Wallmart and Gamestop.
Sure sex sells but in cases like Mass Effect 1-2, I don't recall the 'romantic options' being a selling point.

I have really only seen some of this kind of thing in Fable back quite awhile ago. They didn't really show anything. I don't think these kinds of things are appropriate in video games but it is not my place to judge anyone who plays them. I think it also matters like how it affects or does not affect the one playing the game.

Sex is (thankfully) much more of a part of our daily existence than violence - and considerably more pleasurable as well. Yet somehow, some people react quite negatively to it while depictions of violence do not even raise an eyebrow.

Really, if you are still dishing out money to them after Dragon Age 2, you are getting precisely what you deserve.

Dragon Age 2... ugh! Don't get me started! I'm pretty sure we have EA to thank for that.

And then, there's the ending of Mass Effect 3.
(Yes. You read correctly. Ending: singular. After three games and countless hours of gameplay, you can choose one of three options that are 90% identical and simply present you the same stock footage through a different colour filter: red explosions, blue explosions, green explosions. And the five minutes preceding that rip so many plot holes into the fabric of the game's canon and plot that it's hard to believe the same people were in charge.)

yup, couldn't agree more. But the rest of ME3 was spectacular.
Absolutely, even though you could really tell that they might have needed a little more time (which, incidentally, might also explain the ending).

Fortunately, they've more or less promised to answer some of the criticism in upcoming DLC. A small part of me still hopes that it was supposed to be a sham ending all along, and that the Indoctrination theory really holds some water. (The signs are there, but I do not dare to trust them.)

Huh, sounds rather like the Deus Ex Human Revolution ending. Disappointing.

I agree also that Bioware aren't amazing, they've been practically making the same game multiple times and getting away with it.

What are your thoughts about sex in video games, ones that don't show it all the way. Like in Mass Effect, your character can pursue a relationship and on the way to the final mission, they meet up for a night, I think it's unavoidable if your character pursues someone.

I think it's annoying that that random minor character Steven Cortez is one of the new romance interests instead of James Vega, whose hilarious. Also, still no romancing Dr. Chakwas. :(

As for the sex, it's fine. The game is rated M for a reason.

Elaborates: Think the sex scene for 300, minus anything that would actually require censoring, with really dramatic music that will make you pray that nobody actually walks in while the scene is playing, and that's the Dragon Age sex scenes.
