  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do people believe these "sightings" are really Mary? I can understand if someone sees a vision of a female or hears something, but claiming images in food seems amazingly degrading and disrespectful.
Do you think, and I ask the Catholics here, all these images are really Mary making herself known or a religious fervor among some?

There are a very few Marian apparitions that have been confirmed by the Church to be authentic.

Fatima, Lourdes, Guadeloupe, Rue de Bac, La Salette, Pontmain, Knock, Beauraing, and Banneux are all considered authentic. Mudjegorje is still regarded with some skepticism.

This article makes some interesting reading about the distinction between a genuine Marian apparition and a hallucination or a snare of the Devil.

It seems strange that the church would say some are from the devil.

In the case of most of these "sightings" only one or two people actually see or hear anything.he rest seems like group hysteria

the sightings confirmed by the Church (eg Fatima, Lourdes, etc.) I believe to be true.
I'd like to add that the Church (Roman Catholic or other) does not say you must believe in them.
Exactly.

How do people know what Mary looks like? Is it down to 4th century catacomb and wall paintings in Rome?

Because St. Luke painted a picture of her before her repose. It was approved by Mary herself and painted on her kitchen tabletop.

The icon is now located on the island of Malta.

Forgive me...

That is awesome, do you know of a website where we can get more information on this and maybe a larger view?

The only pictures I have seen of it were taken by tourists to Malta who took a photo when they shouldn't have.

Forgive me...

Hey, I've seen that icon at St. George's Basilica in Gozo. I got married there.

Right, and I've got some ocean front property in Arizona.
What did she stamp it with her official seal?
or is it like the 100 nails from our Saviours crucifixion that are in circulation.
You believe this?

Do you have any information that what is claimed is NOT true, other than pointed sarcasm?
