FBI tapes reveal Martin Luther King’s affairs ‘with 40 women’

The FBI has released files in a data dump a while ago - amongst these a noted Martin Luther King biographer came across transcripts of tapes from a bugging operation. These state that King and a fellow pastor discussed which female parishioners would be "suitable for natural or unnatural sex acts" and when one objected, she was raped by the other pastor - while King encouraged him and laughed. Similarly, the transcripts report his numerous affairs, orgies with prostitutes and violence toward these women.

Now you could argue this is all fabricated by the hostile FBI at the time - but why hide something if your goal is to besmirch someone? The tapes themselves will only be released in a couple of years, when their classified status expires. This should give one pause. Further, this comes from reputable sources, not the fringes.

Regardless, very disturbing in the extreme.

My understanding is that this information was kept to blackmail him....back when the FBI did that sort of thing.

Problem with that is that the FBI was not hostile at the time. Really, there's nothing come to light that informed people haven't known for a long time. It has been fashionable to explain it away as being the work of a conspiracy of "racists" in the FBI to "get" King. But the FBI, or the "Federal Bureau of Integration" as it was sometimes known in the South, was actually sympathetic to the cause of the Civil Rights Movement, as of course is Garrow...

I guess I don't understand why this is shocking or why people seem to need heroes. I can respect someone's accomplishments all day, but I will always look on them personally with a sceptical eye. I don't know anyone without flaws. And when we go back, even a generation- please, it always gets worse.

He may have committed these crimes. If so, it doesn't really change what I think of him because I didn't idolize him in the first place.

He is not here to defend himself. Given Hoover's proclivities towards fake reports in order to attack those he felt were communists I would take anything from his time with a salt lick.

King did associate extensively with known leaders of the Communist Party. That's how all this personal information on him came up in the course of the FBI's investigations.

basically your post here shows how blindly ignorant of actual history you are. the fbi in those days was a tool of hoover. plain and simple. and hoover hated king. he hated the civil rights movement as a whole because he thought it was being backed by the communists and he was driven to destroy communism both real and imagined on his part.
thus he was more than happy to make mountains out of things that weren't even true as long as they served to help him destroy communists.
efforts to get the fbi to help the civil rights movement at all only occurred because they were forced upon it against hoover's will.

"Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again."

Boy the way Glen Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made,
Those were the days.
And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man
Like Herbert Hoover again.
Didn't need no welfare state,
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days.
