  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

My dad owns the dojo so I've been in the dojo all my life. He lived and studied in Japan for 7 years and from his stories it is different and was incredible. I only remember practicing at 2 years old because we have pictures of it. LOL

I just took my 1st kyu test a week ago which is the level before Sho Dan (black belt). It was an hour and twenty minutes demonstrating almost 100 techniques and ultimately testing my stamina. Here is a video cut down to about 2 minutes.

Elena House - 合気道 (Aikido) test - Singing by Elena House - YouTube

My father studied for 30 years and as I mentioned lived in Japan for 7 years. He run his dojo VERY traditionally. There are no color belts but we are told not to wash our belts as tradition states. If someone works out a lot we can tell by their ragged looking belt.

He also sticks to the tradition that a Sho Dan can not be earned until 15 years old. I hope that next year when I am 15 I can be the first student he has awarded Sho Dan to at that age. Believe me, even though I am his daughter, I will have to earn it. The shortest time someone in his school received a Sho Dan was in four years and that was to his Uchi Deshi (live in student). Others have taken from 6 to 10 years for their first degree black belt.
Great video! Some of that looks familiar. My style incorporates Aikido principles more as you advance towards black belt.

My style is about the same with kids as far as rank goes.

Such a cute pic of you as a kid there. My daughter has been informally training since she was a baby. It's amazing what even the very young can pick up.

Lol, no. That's Dan Inosanto (friend of Bruce Lee's and carries the torch for both Jun Fan Kung Fu, JKD, and also - as shown above - is a top-class practitioner of everything southern Chinese, Filipino, and Indonesian) and his demo partner who generally tours with him any time he's doing an exhibit.

My instructor right now is studying under one of his students for affiliation, has currently been in for 30 years and has great Kali, Kuntao, Wing Chun, Panantukan, etc. but wants to keep sharpening his skills.

I have definitely heard of Dan Inosanto!

I love martial arts, but I have been plagued by injury. I have trained in BJJ and ITF Taekwondo. I am currently trying to find something I can train that won't aggravate my various injuries, and have tried everything from Aikido to Muay Thai. I am soon going to be starting training with a shotokan instructor, and I am optimistic!

I use my dojo time quite often to rehab from whatever injury I'm dealing with. Right now, that means very little mat work and avoiding things that make my back hurt. So I participate where I can, and when I can't I bow out and stretch on the mats for a bit.

Most of my injuries happen in my Everyday Life. You would think it'd be the opposite.

I have a hip injury, and impact (aikido, judo) is a big problem as is hyper extension which ruled out some of the striking styles I have tried. The shotokan is with a well respected instructor who is starting a new school near to me. It's traditional shotokan, sports karate and "combatives", which is ideal for me. I like a blend of self defence, competition and tradition.
