  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So anyone else do MA around here?

I do a style that no one here has probably ever heard of:
Cuong Nhu.
Been doing it for more than four years now and love it.
Cuong Nhu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also did a few months each of:
Taekwondo (self defense class TKD based), cardio kickboxing and Judo.
Did about two years of Kenpo.

Sorry if I'm late replying to this. Just saw your thread, and decided to join the site. I have been studying for about 6 years, admittedly I haven't actually attended class at the dojo for several of those past 6 years. Primarily due to a combination of temporarily moving away, low income, attempting to balance out my time with Church/School/finding work. So, now, Praise God, I'm in technical school preparing for college, and am employed, so I plan on starting back at the dojo within a matter of a month or so.

Anyways, the dojo I count myself a student of offers at least a foundation in several styles. Though the most advanced training, and primary styles of the dojo are Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, Kung Fu San Soo, and Nihon Ryu Jiu Jitsu. Though, while students are trained in all of these throughout their time at the dojo, actual certification isn't offered for San Soo, or Nihon Ryu until around Black Belt level of Shaolin. I am currently a Blue Belt in Shaolin.

Considering that the college I plan to get my BA in is around 2 hours away from my current area (the dojo's current area) I will probably begin studying at a Tae Kwon Do dojo that is near that college, I have heard about. Unfortunately I've been told that a great deal of their teaching is poor quality in regards to self-defense (I study martial arts for self-improvement, and self-defense.) though the exercising and work on kicks is still highly praised, therefore I figure it will still offer me some nice skills to augment what I already know.

Someday I would love to study Tai Chi.

Also, I have recently heard of an Ishin Ryu teacher in my area that sounds very promising, I plan on asking his former student more about where to find him, etc. I may very well train under him at some point in the future.

Awesome to hear Saxon. As you grow in Judo, I'd love for you to inform me about it, if you don't mind. I've heard it's very similar to jujitsu, but I've never really had any first-hand experiences with it. Also, I believe I informed you all incorrectly. It's Sanshin Ryu Jujitsu we study at my dojo. I'm still learning all the technical names for the styles, and techniques, so yeah lol.

You've heard right about TKD. Some of their schools offer Hapkido to make up for the self-defense deficit.
We do some Tai Chi-like forms in my style after you get into brown belt. I look forward to learning those.

I've trained in boxing before, and have just started training in wrestling and Judo at my gym. I absolutely love every minute of it even though i am still just a beginner.
You are in your "honeymoon" so enjoy every minute of it!

Thanks WalksWithChrist. I appreciate the info. I've never actually had the opportunity to see Tae Kwon Do in person, so I've just had to rely on word-of-mouth to gain some idea of it. I hear that it's very good for improving fitness, which is of course, a good thing.

Hapkido is a style I've heard of, that'd be interesting to study, though I don't believe the dojo I was referring to offers it, they do offer some type of sword-play (though the teacher is admittedly self-taught..so one must ask, which raises a few questions in and of itself.)

Yeah, martial arts is a lot like a marriage. You feel a love you can't describe, yet you also are forced to feel terrible pain, and in the end, you're a better person for it. lol

If you want a lot more input on MA stuff head over to Martial Arts Planet. Lots of MA discussions and it's not *too* harsh to endure snark-wise.

Yeah, watch out for the sword stuff. Especially if the guy pulls out a real sword and starts swinging it around!

Appreciate it WalksWithChrist. I'll keep that in mind. Yeah, if I do decide to attend that dojo during my time in undergrad studies then I'll just avoid that class altogether lol. Though whether I attend it at all or not, really depends on time, and school-load. It may not fit into my schedule at all, though I am interested to see if at least it'd offer some good exercises I could incorporate.

Doing MA in college is great, but sometimes you can't fit everything you want to do into your schedule. I could have attended a FREE class (in my current style no less!) back in college but I could never seem to get myself there when they were working out. Also never did get to take Intermediate Judo...I'm still smarting over that.

Ah. You practice the ancient and secret art of Glock Fu!
:p

Yeah, Tai Chi is good for old folks with joint issues.

The martial fighting styles are really great especially for smaller folks & women in that it gives them an advantage. I'm 6'2" 240, shaved head and permanent scowl~~punks just don't bother me, they look for easier food...but most people don't share my beauty & proportions;)

Yeah, I hear ya guys! I'm planning on going to class this Tuesday (and every following Tuesday, Lord willing). So, hoping that all works out. As I've already mentioned, I believe that within the time I'll need to get my Associate degree (in this area) I'll be able to hit the black-belt ranks. Of course, when I say that, I mean the skill associated with the rank, and the rank itself. As I've also mentioned my interest in teaching later on, thus the rank is still rather important too. After the Associate degree though, I am confident I'll not be attending a dojo as often, for sure. Assuming I ever take up regular dojo classes, it all is a matter of timing.

I'm not exactly small myself. I like training so I know a bunch of ways to take somebody out without reducing them to a smear on the sidewalk.

Tip for ya, school comes first! But it sounds like you have that figured out already. You can train MA your whole life but you may only be in college once around.
