  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I totally understand, why you would marry to be safe, but yes the marriage is a lie, both to god and to the authorities. Add into the mix, adultery, and possible divorce, that's a lot of sin to deal with. I have no answers for you, but I'm only a man, you need to look for God, he is the one that can keep you safe, I will pray for you.

Brah I married my wife we met in college my freshman year and I have a child. Not to mention I'm a first generation American.

My family comes from Jamaica and its really hard to get your papers right in America for us. The reason is we have a really bad rep so there are cousins that do marry each other in order to make money and send back home to their families ect.

I just thought it was interesting the state vs God who rules marriage. Is it a contract or covenant? Can you be married by signing a paper?

Avniel,

Nice pictures. I take it that isn't a picture of kissing cousins. :) I see you were exercising some leadership in jumping over the broom, too.

About marriage, in the Bible, there is nothing about an elder/priest of the church needing to declare a blessing to make a marriage valid. Marriages were legal agreements. In the Old Testament, the bride's father--if he were alive-- would make an agreement with the potential groom to give his daughter in marriage.

I do think it is adultery to marry someone legally and sleep with a girlfriend/boyfriend on the side.

Btw, do you think any Jamaicans here would go for arranged marriages with someone from Jamaica. I'd imagine culturally there could be some differences between people from the Jamaican culture and the African American culture here.

As for the legitimacy of the marriage, it is a tricky one and I was just thinking about that today. There are lots of different ways that someone could be married, but how does God really view them?

I don't know the answer to that, but it is quite interesting to think about. I actually signed on because I was going to ask what people thought about unusual marriage situations like this one.

I got culturally adopted in to my wife's family as a cousin so I could marry her.

They wanted me to have a family name to marry her and preserve the culture. I didn't have to get that by being a cousin, but that's the way they did it. I think it's the norm for her people's tradition.

The bible says judge not others or you shall be judged.
....just wanted to add the rest of this, as it's misapplied so commonly:

“For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you."~Matthew 7:2

IOW.....no double-standards. No partiality. What's a rule/moral/boundary for one....is the same for others.

Several things in play here.

God sets up rulers or deposes them FOR OUR BENEFIT.
God never gave permission to defraud any Government OR to deny our family's authority in our lives.

Even the stories of Joseph's sons or Esther or Ruth each of them had to follow family authoritarian lines.

AND

The focus of a Christian life is living for Another and no longer for ourselves as American culture promotes at every turn.

But God gave us all "hardwiring" that makes us desire wedded bliss and children of our own.

Maybe telling your cousin that the day when you find someone that you seriously wish to date and possibly really marry you are going to file for legal divorce. That his time of being married to you is tenuous and going to end. (So he can make plans)
