  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi,

What if two unmarried people (whether Catholic/non-Catholic Christian/non-Christian) have sex (I agree this is sin), would they have to stay together then, considering their union (becoming one flesh - 1 Cor. 6:16) through this act?

Or would they be free to separate and marry someone else (they were never married through sacramental or civil marriage in the first place)?

they would not be forced to marry each other

some people believe that the act of sex is enough to make a bond of marriage

this is not really a proper understanding

there are two types of marriage, a natural marriage and a sacramental marriage

a natural marriage can be between any man and woman, they do not have to be Christian, that is why even in the really anti-semetic middle ages, jewish married couples were never counted as fornecators for not being married by the Church

natural marriages can be disolved, that is why you see divorce is allowed for some reasons in the OT, natural marriages are more dependant on the local culture and the local laws, so if you live in a country or tribe that states if you have sex, that is counted as a marriage, well that is something you have to take up with the local judge (thank God no modern country has such a law)

Sacramental marriages are deeper then just sex, it is a Sacrament of the Church and it can not be disolved like a Natural Marriage

Is that actually how it is phrased? Do Catholics really believe my marriage is simply about sex?
Oh no!

I am so sorry if that is how it came out like that

he asked a question about sex being like a form of marriage, we do not believe that.

Natural Marriages conform to the rules of the society they are in, more or less. So a Natural Marriage can be disovled

we believe that a Christian Marriage is invested with a special grace from God and that a legitimate Sacramental Marriage is untill "death do you part" type thing

I did not mean to trivialize the marriages of non-Christians in any way

Jesus said - 'He also is not your husband' - we just had that reading.
