I really need some advice right now as to which branch would be best for me to enlist in. Please dont hide any information which could ease my decision making. And dont debate on this thread. Just tell me why or why not I should join either one. Take this seriously, please. I am going through a lot of stress, and I need help to ease this stress. I feel like the military is the place for me to go after Highschool, but I dont know which would be best for me.

Some of the things which I am looking for are: College money, travel, discipline, skills for future career.
The army will be a better place to get job skills. All have the same opportunities for college and money. Neither marine nor army bases are better than the other (both are poorer than the air force facilities). Marine locations are typically by the shore since they are linked to the navy. Marines deploy more frequently, which is good for money, but bad for college aspirations. Both have great discipline, but the Marines edge out the army here.

The best place for job skills is in the air force. It is great for college aspirations, but poor in travel. Discipline is also superb, but instead of macho discipline, it is more of a professional discipline.

I am in the USAF, but if you'd like help sorting out what recruiters of any branch are telling you, I would gladly be an impartial person to bounce things off of. PM me if you would like to talk further.

God bless you,
Dave

The Marines are a part of the Department of the Navy....the Mens Department. Also this couldn't be more wrong
Marine officers tend to be more concerned with acting like Marine officers. Put it this way.
Marine officers never seem to tire of being saluted.
.

That is digusting. Officers are the most squared away officer personnel out there. They don't just get saluted, they are true leaders. Marine officers tend to care for there troops more. Thats why you see some of them coming home with Navy Crosses for they bravery in saving there troops.

What Armed Service were you in daidhaid?

Marine officership is probably the most difficult position to attain in the military. It is the most rigorous and most demanding of all the the officer training courses. And this is coming from an Air Force officer...

Heh heh heh....

Oh uh ok. you can be an ocifer too sumeday if you tri hard enuff..

1.For every really squared away officer I saw in the field
I saw many many more NCO's who excelled.
So excuse my natural prejudice.
As the saying goes " don't call me sir I work for a living".

2.And I'll stick by the marines officer salute statement based on personal interactions while on duty in places where marines and army were in proximity.
Just don't overlook any bored marine officers.
Never said that they were wimps, or anything like that.
They just enjoy saluting more than average.
That disgusts you, now that's funny.

Are you still barking at me? I got bootlaces older than you.
Oh lets see if I can remember...
Oh oh army yup it was army.

so to be clear and set it all out for ya.
let me make a general rating of generic off the shelf officers.
I prefer Army officers. Sorry but it is obvious they are the best.
Marine officers second. In spite of the saluting problems they are talented and they are tough and brave. I especially like Gen. S Butler.
Navy could be second but I didn't see to many of them, I think they are sort of rare. Their pilots are great, uniforms are swell, lots of heroes.
Coast Guard must be good. Great uniform, but I never met one.
Air Force, sorry someone has to be last. I never met one that impressed me in anyway, good, bad or indifferent.
However, I'm sure they have good points and I hear they are great at math.
I don't like the uniform at all, and I read a book By Gen. Curtis Lemay, that made me ill, so last place Air Force, sorry.

Aint Ready to be Marines Yet(spell out the capitilized letters), and I meant to just put personnel, I slipped w/the extra officer. Sue me for my mistake.

ARMY is getting a little sloppy. Marine officers are the most squared away.

How long were you in the Army daidhaid?

If I was barking at you, you'd know it.

Marine officers are generally squared away, some like to be saluted, perhaps they do so their Marines will salute their, officers', bosses if they happen to visit. The main thing is they don't want to look bad... if one of their Marines screws up and it doesn't make the blotter-noone important finds out- they can be forgiving, but if it hits the fan and word gets out about the mess up, then Marine officers have no problem laying the hammer down on the poor Marine who messed up.

lol...well, my boyfriend did seem to love all that. I dunnow why. But, anyway, I am SO glad he's not in the military anymore, I mean I love that he wants to serve his country, but I couldn't deal with him being gone so long nor could I deal with him being in a war.
One of my second cousins retired from the Navy, E-6, five years or so ago. He worked on subs most of the time, like your bf he liked it but he was never married.

*rolls eyes* Better than Army of One! :p

But in all seriousness, almost ALWAYS (with a few exceptions) the best officers are the prior enlisted...

Air Force needs to get some color on there Dress Unis....was watching the Reagan Funeral/Internment, they looked sharp, but all blue kind of gets old. The Army looked pretty sharp, Navy looked real good, Coast Guard w/blue unis and white hats, look real good, but those Marines in white dress pants, looked squared away.

Amedeus, I applaud your choice of joining the armed forces. I have not read the posts here so I don't know if someone has already said this, but having served in the Army and having family in the Marines and Airforce, I would like to say that the Airforce appears to be the best service to enlist in.

The tests for promotion are written tests rather than standing in front of a commitee being stared down by ranking members. They are also more family oriented. There are more technical job choices.

The army was great, but if I had it to do over, I would have joined the air force.

God bless you for your decision to join.

Actually, getting into the Air Force may not be that easy. The Navy and the Air Force are currently sitting about 16,000 overmanned, while the Army is at a whopping 40,000 undermanned. The situation has gotten bad enough that the Air Force and Army have started a "Blue to Green" Program, in which members of the Air Force can go directly into the Army with little more than an "orientation" to Army rank structure and divisions, and a basic marksmanship course. After that, the personnel go straight to their new units. I would think though, that there would be more training involved, especially if you're joining an MOS that is different than your AFSC. If I can't cross train to Aerial Gunner like I want to, I may do this.

As I said, the there would more than likely be AIT if the MOS you're going to is different than the AFSC you came from.

Man... this could turn out worse than the Nam era shake and bake promotions.

Besides PT, weapons training, common skills, ait, there is a whole different mindset between the services.
for ex.
Infantry going from army to marine wouldn't work well at all and there is common ground there.
It starts in basic everyone needs to start there.
