• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The idea of Marian Devotion is based on the fact that as Jesus came to us through Mary, we can go to Him through her. Mary lived a perfect life, devoid of all sin, and therefore doesn't take any glory for herself but directs all praise and devotion to her Son, as is the nature of perfection.
Did Mary need a savior, and could Mary have bought us on the cross since she was sinless?

Unlike Christ, Mary is a created creature; she is not divine, and thus she needed a savior just like anyone of us. But what differentiates Mary from the rest of the world is that God chose to elevate her to a point that can almost be thought of as divine; God gave her the ability to distribute His graces freely, and she does this through her most powerfull intercessions. To put this into perspective, St. Louis De Montfort even said that Her prayers bare more weight than all the angels and saints in heaven combined.

Mary works tirelessly to bring the world to her Son, and we have evidence of this through the countless appartitions and visions she has appeared to people throughout the centuries. Of course, people are weak, and just prior to the reformation in the 16th century, many people began worshipping her as divinity. This must have broken her heart because she wants nothing more than to be the last, while her Son is the first; She is the perfect model of humility and all her glory and praise she passes directly to God.

Since she was "conceived by the Holy Spirit" in Luke, we recognize Mary as spouse of the Holy Spirit. And being the spouse of the Holy Spirit; the link between us, Christ, and the Father, I'm sure you can see the powerful role she has in our spiritual family.

In Christ through Mary,

-Davide

Fascinating. Where is Raphael in scripture, I cant find him? What are the feast days about. Do you gather together and feast on scrumptous food on those days? If thats so you may wish to invite some baptists :yum: ;)
Feast days are days on which we honour a particular saint, or some mystery of the Lord, such as his Nativity (December 25), or his Transfiguration (August 6), or the Body of Christ, present in the Eucharist (Thursday after the Octave of Pentecost).

Usually, the feast day of a saint is the day of his death, or his heavenly birthday. Sometimes another day is chosen if the day of death is already taken by another saint. It's sometimes the day before or after, or perhaps the day of his ordination, if he's a bishop or pope, or the day on which his body was moved to another church.

They're called feast days because in times past, when most people barely had enough food, these days were indeed feasts when everyone had a bit more to eat. Nowadays, the food aspect isn't really done, but they're still celebrated at Mass and in the Divine Office.

Mary, like all men, needed a saviour. She was just saved a bit differently. Imagine someone falling into a pit. They could be pulled out afterwards, or they could be prevented from falling in in the first place. Either way, they were saved. Mary, being conceived without original sin, was saved the second way, through a special grace of God and because she was to carry Jesus in her womb.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO
THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 12, 2003
THE COVA, FATIMA

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Heaven and earth,
And tender Mother of men, in accordance with
Your ardent wish made known at Fatima,
I consecrate to your Immaculate Heart
Myself, my brothers and sisters, my family and friends,
My country, my culture,
The cultures and nations of the world,
And the whole human race.

Reign over us, Most Holy Mother of God,
And teach us how to make the heart of your Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ reign and triumph in us
Even as It has reigned and triumphed in you.

Reign over us, most Blessed Virgin,
That we may be yours in prosperity and in adversity,
In joy and in sorrow, in health and in sickness,
In life and in death.

O most compassionate heart of Mary, Queen of Heaven,
Watch over our minds and hearts and preserve them
From the impurity which you did lament
So sorrowfully at Fatima.
Assist us in imitating you in all things,
Especially purity.

Help us to call down upon our country
And upon the whole world
The peace of God in justice and charity.
Therefore, most gracious Virgin and Mother,
I hereby promise to imitate your virtues
By the practice of a Christian life without regard
To human standards and human respect.
I resolve to read and pray with the Scriptures,
Go to Confession and receive Holy Communion regularly,
And to offer you five decades of the rosary each day,
Together with my sacrifices,
In the spirit of Reparation and penance.
Amen...

Marian devotion usually consists of reciting the rosary which is a set of prayers making up 5 decades. We dedicate prayers to her so she prays for us and draw us closer to Jesus. This link tells the benefits and promises of the rosary http://tomsdomain.com/rosary/

The swords piercing her hearts comes from that one prophecy when Jesus and Mary took the child Jesus before Simeon. Simeon was told that he would not die until he saw the messiah, when he realized Jesus was the messiah he knew the prophecy was fulfilled. While they were there he said to mary "and your own soul a sword shall pierce". This referred to when Mary had to later watch her own son be tortured and crucified, the sorrow in her heart was as if a sword had pierced it. Also her heart is the "Immaculate heart of Mary" and Jesus's is the "Sacred Heart."
I clicked on that link above, and I am just floored by what I am reading.

"But, what makes the rosary special? The Blessed Mary herself gave us the reasons (as given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan). Here are the fifteen promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary."

Does this mean that St. Dominic claimed that Mary communicated with him?

Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces.
I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary.
The rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the heart of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
The soul which recommend itself to me by the recitation of the rosary, shall not perish.
Whoever shall recite the rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.
Whoever shall have a true devotion for the rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
Those who are faithful to recite the rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.
I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the rosary.
The faithful children of the rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven.
You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the rosary.
All those who propagate the holy rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death.
All who recite the rosary are my son, and brothers of my only son Jesus Christ.
Devotion of my rosary is a great sign of predestination.
These sound too suspicious. It reminds me of when the Church was selling salvation. As though money could purchase the eternal.

And now this rosary is supposed to grant supernatural blessings? It is a physical object, like money. I know that the rosary represents prayer, but still. That stuff is really, really strange.

How do you even know that Mary can hear your prayers?

The Church never sold salvation. That is bigotted anti-Catholic mythology.

The object does nothing. They prayer does.

Like all the other Saints, Mary is alive and well. The Church has always communicated with the Saints in heaven.

Your comments are being monitored and sound rather like like debating, which is not allowed in this forum.

Marian devotion has two levels, IMO. There is the devotion that is inherent in the doctrines and dogmas of faith, in the Liturgy and feast days and traditional prayers. Then there is the devotion that goes into private revelation which is not doctrinal. The rosary though very widely loved is a private revelation. Parts of the rosary includes traditional prayers of the Church such as the Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be.

I'm not heavy on the private revelation, though I like the rosary (usually prayed on my fingers or go along with the group at the church) I'm not a staunch devotee. The devotions within the liturgy such as times when we speak of "Mary and the saints" or the recent Mary Mother of God feast day I enjoy and appreciate very much.

Didn't read all the replies, so sorry if any of that is rehash.

My devotion to Mary does not include the Rosary. I have icons of Mary (one of which is depicted below) and I pray before them, asking the Theotokus (the God Bearer) to pray for me and for all those who I am praying for. There are also prayers which are hymns of praise to Mary called Akathists which I sometimes pray.

Agreed. At the end of the day I feel as If I have learned something, hopefully earned some respect and not to mention, those "Thread Closed" PM's drive me nuts. :p

Thanks for answering my questions. I am afraid I am burnt out of questions for the day.

Yes, this is how the rosary originated. Mary appeared to St. Dominic and gave him the rosary in a vision. She told him to preach it to the world and said it would be a powerful means of converting people and bringing them to a closer union with her Son.
