If we can't carry man purses, where the hell do I put my make-up? :tutu:

(I guess my sarcasm might be lost on people who don't know me, but I'm indeed sarcastic.)

If I'm dating a guy that carries a murse - how will he ever be able to hold MY purse while I go into the dressing room to try things on?? :p

Take your purse in to the dressing room with you!! *shakes fist*

FOUND the pics I was looking for:

http://www.sheknowsbest.com/the-man-purse/

Some of those are plain horrible, especially the girly tiny handbags and such.

I'm with the majority and AGAINST man purses. Although I definitely do carry my laptop in a padded laptop bag, and I see a lot of messenger bags on campus (both on men and women) who want a more grown up look than using a backback, although messenger bags hold a lot less weight, and they're horrible on the shoulders. I'm sticking with my backpack for school.

I think for business, a messenger bag thingy is a perfect alternative to a brief case. Can stick your laptop in there and all your paperwork. Also a big case is good for traveling -- I see tons of them in airports.

But for social outings and such, I think it's hilarious and stupid for a guy to carry anything other than a wallet in his pocket. I mean, what do guys honestly need? Make-up? a tampon? An adult toy? Mace? Rape whistle?

Hell, I don't even know what WOMEN carry in their purses! Can anyone enlighten me?

Peacemonger, those kind of travel/day bags have been around for years. They are usually featured in catalogs and stores that sell travel items. (For what it's worth the only guy I know who carries an actual women's style purse is gay.)

The only other kinds of "questionable" bags I see guys with are the messenger/briefcase style, or the single strap backpack things that are more ergonomically correct for the back/shoulder. What do you call those?

Quirk,

I don't want them to be impressed with me. I have no use for men who embrace homosexual and feminine style to make themselves cool. Men and women were created as separate beings for a reason. Men don't make good women, and vice versa. Same thing happens when people start embracing prison/gang style of behaving and dressing. It is embracing a lifestyle that is embraced by sinful people, making it ok.

I don't mind the messenger bags, but the ones that really look like purses creep me out. I work at a bookstore and we once had a guy looking for his lost man purse. We wrote in on the board in the break and it was a big joke for like a month. Never did find it though. As a girl, I rarely even carry a purse. I carry either a messenger bag or a sling bag.

Ok, so I definately realize the need for men to carry their things with them.... but a purse? Come on, dudes!

I have seen this trend really taking off. A lot of guys are now carrying man purses, murses, attache bags, messenger bags, etc... Whatever you name them, they are purses. It drives me nuts. I know a lot of guys who are masculine guys, but have started carrying these things to keep all their gear close. It makes me laugh a bit.

If I am going somewhere where I need to carry stuff I don't have pockets for, I will carry a backpack.

It's really funny to me when I see these couples walking down the street or around a mall, and the man and the woman are both carrying purposes.

I totally understand a lot of this had to do with gender stereotypes. I just can't for the life of me see why men need to carry a purse!

So, what other traditionally gender specific items do you see a lot of men and women crossing over and adapting?

Coach
If someone uses a purse, then they probably need it. And I think it's an awesome trend... to me, everything that goes against gender stereotypes is awesome. :)

Rad, I simply think men carrying purses is absolutely stupid. When it is the result of crossing over and incorporating female and homosexual style into the man's style, I have a huge problem with that.

I drive a motorcycle. If I need to take things with me, I use my saddle bags to hold the stuff. Or I carry a backpack. A purse/shoulder slung bag would be impractical and in the way on a motorcycle.

Men are men and women are women. Trying to be the other doesn't work.

Is a man carrying a purse a sin? I wouldn't go that far. Does it look stupid and promote a lifestyle that is? Yes.

Messenger-type bags (not to be confused with murses) have been around at least as long as the pony express... and are actually much older than that. They have a long history of use by men. Apparently when the bags came off the horse, there was a shoulder strap to carry them with.

PonyExpress-3.jpg

According to Wikipedia:

History

This type of bag has been used in the transportation of mail and goods by numerous types of messengers, including Pony Express riders, postal workers, messengers on foot (especially in ancient times), and bicycle couriers. Some Royal Mail carriers in the United Kingdom currently use large messenger bags to deliver mail.

The design of the modern messenger bag traces its origin to the utility lineman's bag of the 1950s. It allowed lineman to carry necessary tools within easy reach while climbing utility poles made by Globe Canvas. Later adapted by New York City bicycle messengers using Manhattan Portage bags, each company would typically use a different color to identify the messenger's company.

I don't think it has anything to do with so-called "metrosexuality". It's just a result of people carrying more things: cell phones, computers, portable music devices, etc.

It's a mystery. It's like why socks disappear in the dryer. Don't ask and they won't have to make your death look like an accident.

There's no such thing as a homosexual style. As for crossing over between things traditionally considered feminine or masculine, that's definitely a good thing... individuality is much better than following stereotypes. :)
