I've decided to pursue the art of making cord rosaries. Of course, I have yet to start this and tomorrow, I hope I can find the right supplies. It seems that every time I venture into Micheal's or Hobby Lobby, I am disappointed that they never have anything I am looking for. I'm too lazy to go online and buy anything since I want to start making them NOW. I should be studying for finals but oh well...

I actually have made my own rosary chaplets but they're not very good. I feel like I can improve upon them by remaking them into cord rosary chaplets. The only problem I'm going to have with finding supplies is trying to find a cord rosary tool. Does anyone know if such a thing could be found at Hobby Lobby/Micheal's; or rather, if there is an exact equivalent cord rosary-type tool that they would sell?

If anyone is interested, this can become a charity thing as well. Is there anyone out there that can't afford a rosary and would like a free one(that might not be too good :p) if I make one for you?

I think that's a cool idea :) I'm thinking of making Rosaries too.. and also the 7 Sorrows Rosaries, because they're hard to find ;)

Hard to find? Other than looking online, I'd say it's impossible. I went and asked a store manager about one, and she had never seen/heard of it. The priest that was in there picking up supplies said it's quite difficult, and he's still trying to find one for his brother. It's getting to the point where I'm getting ready to learn how to make them as well. :)

Our Ladys Rosarymakers (http://www.olrm.org/ ) sells a kit and the tool too. Their supplies are at a discount (if making mission rosaries, that is: rosaries given away for free). Believe they also have a list of places that want rosaries as well.

Now as to the tool itself. I know that the group of rosarymakers that I belong to prefer cut umbrella stays--the cord gets placed in the umbrella stay groove and then is rapped evenly around the stay about three times then the "knot" is slipped off the stay and tightened, viola a tiny Franciscan knot! They cut the umbrella stays into about 6 inch pieces (smooth the cut edges of course) and even use them for some measuring of the end. Also, if lucky enough to get a stay with a pre-drilled hole at the end, it's nice to loop some of the cord through the hole and hang the stay around your neck so you never have to worry about misplacing (or even loosing) the tool.

balesom: I figured I was right in not being able to find one in stores, but I don't really want to get one online. As AMDG points out, the olrm.org online store sells them(which I was already aware of, but thanks for pointing it out!). Certainly cord rosary tools have not always existed, so what did people use in olden days when making cord rosaries to tie the loops? That's why I'm wondering if anyone knows of some type of equivalent tool I could use.

Rhamiel: Well, I don't really care about colors. I always have trouble trying to find the correct beads I want. The ones that I used for my rosary chaplets are a "glassy green," but I don't really like the colors. They're too transparent and they don't seem to fit well. Colors I am mostly interested in are shades of blues, greens, purples, and reds. Do I really have a certain style? Not so much....I just make whatever I feel like.

How about the White House? :)

Don't know how long umbrellas have been in existence, but like I said, the rosarymaking group I belong to use umbrella stays (the small grooved metal part of the umbrella that holds up the fabric.) You don't want the fabric, just the stay. Cut the stay into about 6 inch pieces and smooth the cut edges (although I had one person just put masking tape over one edge to form a "handle".) They do not buy the tool. Find the umbrella stays more useful.

Forgot to also say that when they'd make the macrame rosaries from the larger fishing nylon (sold in hardware stores). they'd simply use their fingers. Oh, the nylon can be died different colors (no matter what the salesman says.)

I found one at a Catholic store once!

But I know it's VERY difficult to find them... so I want to make them and give them out to people :)

Eretria. making your own rosary is very cool, any idea as to what style or colors you want?

Monica, what is a 7 sorrows rosary?

Fun rosary fact: The rosary is a chaplet, which is a type of persistent prayer. Hence, chaplets usually use what is commonly known as rosary beads; this is both intentional and unintentional, as the rosary is a popular form of Marian devotion and rosary beads are actually just prayer beads. And now you know.

If anyone wants to make a rosary, I would encourage them to check out www.rosaryshop.com. I have a 5-decade wire rosary I made from a kit I purchased from them sitting here in a pouch on my left hand at the moment. They are a home business I believe; supporting small businesses = good.

They have an interesting website. They have a cool "Design your Kit" system that I used. Custom Rosaries and Holy Rosary Beads, Rosary Parts, How to Pray the Rosary Prayer, Religious Medals, Rosary Bracelets - Create a Custom Rosary
