Before I learned about the teachings of the Catechism, and after my third child, I had a vasectomy done. As I learned of the teachings of God and that a vasectomy is a grave sin, I dealt with guilt and felt like I needed to make amends. My first thoughts were to try and get the vasectomy reversed. Of course, in confession, I explained this to my priest and he said my sin is forgiven and the reversal is not necessary, that it is a good plan but not needed. After checking with a surgeon and being adviced that insurance would not cover it, I realized it was a $6,000 surgery with no guarantees. Since I did not have the money and my family already struggles with finances, my wife and I decided to be foster parents.

Being a foster parent for the last two or so years has been very rewarding and a definate struggle (of sorts.) Now, we are trying to adopt.

For us, this has been a life lesson and I feel like I have been making amends for my bad decision to get a vasectomy. It is a regret that my wife and I live with, but we know now that we can help a child in need. Someone that may not have help, if we were not here to give it.

Thank you God for helping me find healing and being able to make amends and know that I am forgiven. Hopefully, others will get something good out of my story.

God bless you. God can turn the bad things we do into good. He has obviously called you & your wife to this mission. You should feel very blessed you both are on the same page. :)

Jack,

This has clearly been a huge learning process for you .

I'm glad you have come through it but even though you have turned it to good use you still have one lesson to learn - and it's a very hard one.

After Confession you are assured that your sins have been forgiven and also forgotten by the Church - you now have to learn to forgive yourself and then forget. You must not look back - you must look forward.

You are now able to help others - those who may not have had a real life . Enjoy teaching these little ones about the goodness of God - which you found out through hard experiences

Thank you for sharing Jack. You are doing more than most people will ever do in their entire lives for others. The foster children under your care are so blessed.

There is so much love in your lives. May God bless you and your family always.

Can't tell you how many times I've wept bitterly over my own falling. It even got to the point where I was forgiven by the church, but I wasn't forgiving myself. It's a hard road, but this phrase from my Divine Mercy novena and prayer book always gives me comfort:

I've offended you grievously, O beloved Redeemer, but it would still be worse if I were to offend you by thinking that you were lacking in goodness to forgive me. I would rather He deprive me of everything else than the trust I have in your mercy.

Should I fall a hundred times or should my crimes be a hundred times worse than they actually are, I would continued to trust in your infinite mercy!

God Bless^^

Jack, we are never responsible for honest ignorance, but it's good for you to share your experience, and help others not make the same mistakes. And now you know your cross, and now you know how to make carrying your cross bear fruit.

My cross is/was pornography. I used to think so many things weren't porn, but now I see it everywhere. Even in the cut shot at the football game to the cheerleaders. The cultural emphasis on physical beauty and youth is terrible.

And now we approach the time when the world tries to tear families apart by opening stores on Thanksgiving Day...

God bless you, Jack. You'll find what to do with your situation. God will show you. He showed me...:)
