Make a U-Turn

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” - James 4:7-8.

Last Tuesday (June 20, 2000) something almost unheard of in the airline industry occurred. A Southwest Airlines plane turned around to pick up passengers left behind! The plane was 150 miles into the flight when they were notified that three sisters had been left in Kansas City. The girls, only 8, 9, and 12 years of age had gotten off the flight for a snack on a brief stop during their Los Angeles-to-Chicago flight. You have to commend the pilot of this Southwest flight for recognizing the problem, deciding to address the problem, and for actually doing something about it. In our own lives some of us have problems. Those problems range from little white lies to severe addictions. Before anything can be done about the problems in our lives we must first recognize that we have a problem. As David did in Psalm 51 we should recognize that our problem is a sin against God. Once the problem is recognized we need to decide to address the problem. What will it take for us to be relieved of our problem? What will be the consequences if we take action or if we do not? What action is necessary for elimination of this problem? Finally there is one more thing that must be done. We must do something! We must take action to eliminate it.

We eliminate the problems in our lives in the same way that the pilot of the Southwest Airlines eliminated a problem in his life - by making a U-Turn. As King David did in Psalm 51 we must turn back to God. A very good place to begin is James 4:7-8.

What a great devotion!

I was thinking about something the other day as I sat in traffic. Someone was confused and was in the turn lane, and realized in the nick of time that they needed to go straight. They made the decision to correct the situation, they put on the blinker, got the attention of the person in the next lane, and waited until the straight ahead light turned green. Others in the turn lane had the option of honking or going around them (there were two left turn lanes).

So I got to wondering ... for those who have realized that they need to make that U-turn in life to turn back to God, how patient are we in assisting them back to the right path?

Those are some great thoughts. We should be ready and able to direct their path, with the help of God.

wonderful devotion! Thanks for this!
Reminds me of one I heard.

I remember reading "Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you."

Then I began thinking that it is essential to give people a chance of acting on the truth of God. The responsibility must be left with the individual, you cannot act for him, it must be his own deliberate act, but the evangelical message ought always to lead a man to act. The paralysis of refusing to act leaves a man exactly where he was before; when once he acts, he is never the same. It is the foolishness of it that stands in the way of hundreds who have been convicted by the Spirit of God. Immediately I precipitate myself over into an act, that second I live; all the rest is existence. The moments when I truly live are the moments when I act with my whole will. Never allow a truth of God that is brought home to your soul to pass without acting on it, not necessarily physically, but in will. Record it, with ink or with blood. The feeblest saint who transacts business with Jesus Christ is emancipated the second he acts; all the almighty power of God is on his behalf. We come up to the truth of God, we confess we are wrong, but go back again; then we come up to it again, and go back; until we learn that we have no business to go back. We have to go clean over on some word of our redeeming Lord and transact business with Him. His word "come" means "transact." "Come unto Me." The last thing we do is to come; but everyone who does come knows that that second the supernatural rush of the life of God invades him instantly. The dominating power of the world, the flesh and the devil is paralysed, not by your act, but because your act has linked you on to God and His redemptive power.

I like both the devotionals posted here. Thanks for sharing

God Loves us and what's to have a personal realationship with us. This means that we talk and even think about all things with God. If it's not of God we shouldn't even think about it. This doesn't mean we don't slip but when we do we catch ourselves and come back to Gods' Word.
