  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Ooh...I was leaning towards the cheese. Talk about an amazing substance.
Cheese is definitely important....but chocolate is just a little bit better. Eating cheese when you're depressed just doesn't do it ^_^

Then again, cheese does give you a bonus against Elves

This is true. According to Paolini, when elves fart it smells like roses, so cheese would give you a valuable bioweapon against them. ^_^

Or is that not what you meant? :p
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

According to the system that me and my friends at school operate under, Elves have an extreme dislike of cheese. We never actually had an explanation, but yours makes sense ^_^

I don't think I have ever laughed so hard as I have while reading these posts on this thread. Thank you guys, ever so much.

Topic-wise, I haven't seen any red-flags. Most importantly, I think you should take into account how you personally mean these elements/magic-system to be interpreted. God knows you don't mean to have any cultist implication, and I am sure that you will, even on an unconscious level, steer clear of that stuff. It sounds like a pretty sound system, TBH. It is good that you're covering all the bases, though.

If you wanted to make sure the reader made sure there were no occult implications, reverse-engineer a version of the system you are making and make that the Darkness/Evil magic-system, and set up some perspective through contrast. That's what I'm doing in my series with Summoning. Comparison is a powerful tool.

Chocolate or cheese? Hmm...

...I've not heard Mountain Dew yet!

That's 'cuz I'm allergic to Mountain Dew. Chocolate, however, is one of the most wonderful substances God ever created. That and coffee. We should make a magic system where the main source of energy is coffee. :D

Thanks. What do you mean by a "reverse-engineering" of the system?

QUOTE]*Ragetti voice* How'd this go all screwy?[/QUOTE]

Hunger affects the thought-processes too, man. :p

That's 'cuz I'm allergic to Mountain Dew.

That, my friend, is a darned shame. :(

Thanks. What do you mean by a "reverse-engineering" of the system?

Well, I was implying that, for contrast's sake, you might make two magic systems: the one you're fine-tuning now, and another that could be based on it. One side could be the protagonists, which leans toward more Christian ideals (Light); and the other could be blatant or pseudo-Wiccan-Satanic-occult-pagan oriented (Darkness). By lining them up side to side, your reader would never have to worry about seeing any red-flags with your main characters, because all those red-flags are over on the villains' side, waving adamantly for them to see. Comparison is a powerful tool, as I said.

...

:o

I hope that sounded as good as it did last night. I haven't had my Mountain Dew today.

All right, I'm currently working out the magic system for the world my story is set in, and I was wondering if you guys could alert me to any red flags--things that might be considered occultic.

Type of System: Elemental (based on earth, water, wind, fire, light and darkness)

Earth, water, wind and fire are lumped into a group known as "Common Magic." As the name implies, Common Magic can be used by anyone. It is taught in elementary schools onward, much the same way math and science are taught. Those who are naturally good with a certain "branch" of Magic might go into a career stemming from that branch. (For example, someone who is good with water magic might become a sailor, or a firefighter.) Those who aren't good with Magic might look into a career that doesn't require the use of Magic, like journalism or politics.

Light and Darkness: Those will factor prominently into the story, but they are very rare. Only two characters in the story use them. (And I haven't quite worked out how the system governing those two elements will work yet.)

The whole system is still being developed, so if you see any major red flags, tell me.
I too work with light and darkness in my book. It's the Light versus the Darkness. Of course it looks like the Darkness will win but Light always prevails. There are people in my book who use magic for evil but those who use other forces such as the Elemental , she is an Elf in my book says that her gifts have been given to her by the Creator. No one can have a gift unless the Creator has allowed it. My book uses some basic elements from the Bible such as lucifer being thrown from heaven and the Elves represent the angels who protect us etc so what the Creator has given them as gifts to use against darkness is not considered magic they are gifts from the Creator to fight the enemy just as we are given gifts by God to deal with the darkness not only within ourselves but others. We fight a spiritual fight and i've incorporated this into my book..Just as in real life for every good gift that God gives us as a Christian satan has one that mimics it. ie prophecy God gives ESP satan gives, that is just an opinion and not meant to make anyone angry at me. I use that as part of my solution dont' know if this is a help or not or controversial or not I hope not it's really just an idea...... Please don't be angry with me if someone disagrees just trying to help...God bless Lady Marion
