  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

it says in the bible that the magi were astrologers. while I'm not interested in astrology, why do Christians say it's 'evil' considering this fact??
Hi there!

There are several pertinent facts concerning the wise men of Matthew 2. First of all, they were from the East, that being the Chaldeans, who were considered the most knowing people and the best educated. Apparently, these men were watching for the sign of the Christ child, as you say astrologers. But their education included learning languages, science, philosophy, and math. They were the cream of the crop of
Babyonia "U".

It is not known whether they were believers in the coming Messiah when they searched for the child, but it is apparent that when they found the child, they worshipped Him. Were they the first Christians? Yes, probably, for they exercised faith in seeking the Christ child.

Matthew 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

The prophet Daniel also studied at Babylonia "U", and was selected for the program for his intelligence and abilities to learn. He also learned astrology, math, science, and languages, just as the magi did centuries later. To bring it to light, it is never wrong to "learn" about something that is designated "ungodly". It is wrong to apply what is learned about ungodliness. The magi may not have been believers when they began their journey, but they finished the course in "christology" as believers.

To practice ungodliness is what God hates... i.e. sorcery, witchcraft, contacting spirits, or astrology as a form of worship, aka leading in one's life.

Astrology didn't start out as evil, but like everything else, became corrupted. Indeed, the Magi accurately followed the star to the promised Saviours birth site. We are not to worship the creation, but the creator. Everywhere you look at, and the deeper you dig, you find the face of God and His Son.

Genesis 1:14 ¶ And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Psalms 19:1 ¶ The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Here's an interesting site to follow the current astrological movements, including the blood moons mentioned by Jesus before the end-times. Look under the newsletters:

In the ancient world, astrology really had more to do with astronomy than it did with balderdash like horoscopes and the like; the ancient people built high observatories to study the mechanics and movements of the stars and planets. The only difference was that they thought the stars were guided by the gods they represented.
