it says in the bible that the magi were astrologers. while I'm not interested in astrology, why do Christians say it's 'evil' considering this fact??
Hi there!
There are several pertinent facts concerning the wise men of Matthew 2. First of all, they were from the East, that being the Chaldeans, who were considered the most knowing people and the best educated. Apparently, these men were watching for the sign of the Christ child, as you say astrologers. But their education included learning languages, science, philosophy, and math. They were the cream of the crop of
Babyonia "U".
It is not known whether they were believers in the coming Messiah when they searched for the child, but it is apparent that when they found the child, they worshipped Him. Were they the first Christians? Yes, probably, for they exercised faith in seeking the Christ child.
Matthew 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
The prophet Daniel also studied at Babylonia "U", and was selected for the program for his intelligence and abilities to learn. He also learned astrology, math, science, and languages, just as the magi did centuries later. To bring it to light, it is never wrong to "learn" about something that is designated "ungodly". It is wrong to apply what is learned about ungodliness. The magi may not have been believers when they began their journey, but they finished the course in "christology" as believers.
To practice ungodliness is what God hates... i.e. sorcery, witchcraft, contacting spirits, or astrology as a form of worship, aka leading in one's life.
