  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Unbiasedly (is that a word?) speaking, I wonder if as much poop hit the fan with a sober Madonna as it does with a drunken Mel?

She......... suspended herself from a giant mirrored crucifix, head adorned with a designer crown of thorns (provided by Cotter Church Supplies, LA) in an all-out attempt to get someone, anyone out there, riled. LINK

I in no way condone Mel's words, but there are so many in-your-face double standards in this world. But then again, blatantly ridiculing the Christian faith no longer raises most eyebrows.

They're totally different situations. One is a staged re-enactment of a historical event that does not directly ridicule or put down anyone. The other is an accidental drunken tirade directly referencing specific people as evil.

There's a big difference between an impersonation (even if it is less than friendly) and out-and-out hateful statements.

Besides, it's all moot; Madonna's thing is getting plenty of press as well. It won't get as much as Mel, but that's because his deal involves a lot more of a schadenfreude aspect, whereas Madonna is just doing what she normally does.

No offense, but you and I "see" Jesus differently so perhaps that is why a Christian could be just as offended as what Madonna does and equally disturbed at what Mel said.

What Christ did (for the understanding individual) is blasphemed by Madonna.

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]In an e-mail to The Associated Press on Thursday, the singer's New York-based spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, said: "Madonna does not think Jesus would be mad at her, as his teaching of loving thy neighbor and tolerance is Madonna's message as well. The context of Madonna's performance on the crucifix is not negative nor disrespectful toward the church."

IMO, As long as she thinks so then I guess it's okay?

I am more concerned about Mel for two reasons:

He's a Christian and should have a higher standard for himself and his comments were against a whole people.

Madonna is a press hound (not the word I would like to use) and uses Christianity as a attention getter. She has no concept of respect or faith no matter what she says or she wouldn't go about offending large groups of people. I don't expect much from her.
