  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hmm...I hadn't actually noticed, but I guess you're right...mostly fantasy writing...hmm...does that say something about us? Oh, why yes it does! We're FANTASTIC!!! ^_^
:amen:

I have one story that takes place in a land called Starna, that's the only one I have named. There are two or three other worlds that I play with sometimes though

I have four worlds so far, three of which are lame and one of which isn't completely finished yet ^_^ I haven't named it yet. It isn't really a priority for me right now. :p But I have named the two main countries and have worked out their societies, climates, relitave locations on the map, economies, clothing, trade systems, main exports, popular imports, and heiarchies in my head.

I guess I start with the intellectual side. Y'know, what kind of country is it (empire, province, independent, developing, etc.) then work out the social heiarchy (castes, non-set-in-stone classes, tribes) then figure the rest out from there. What do you do?

The "intellectual" method isn't infallible, either....When I started exploring, the main empire was a good deal friendlier. But, since it's a warlike nation, friendliness just wouldn't work too well. And its strongest enemy was a kingdom....but during history class, it struck me that it would work better if it was a tribal nation. :sigh: It's still fun, though....

One can apply that to any of the tribal nations. Tolkien used the Scandanavian - pretty submerged in places but the traces are there in his thinking. Manda Scott does in realy well in her dreaming series - Celtic so I'm a little biased but I find her historically accurate at least. Lewis went all classical & I like that least. I'd rather have any of the Teutonic tribes rampaging round 'red in tooth & claw' than the veneer of civilisation. A personal preference.

I'm kind of the opposite--I like the tribes that are somewhat civilized. Not so civilized that the tribes are little more than a caste system (though I like the whole class system thing, too, just not with tribes), but y'know....some permanent dwellings, (probably not cities, though) set-in-stone laws, a distinct way of life that is common between all the tribes, and a common language.

Oh yes. I'm not so into the nomadic thing. Lacks necessary structure. There has to be some sort of framework to hang the story on & I go all to pieces if I leave things too loose. Mind you one of the best fantasies I ever read was nomadic;Reindeer Moon by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas.

True, true. With my tribal nation, I'm thinking that there won't be any written language. It'll make the empire look down on them even more and give them more reason (at least to them) to conquer the tribal nation....

And the tribal stories are usually the most interesting! Not too fond of the Celtic bardic system myself, but I do like the idea of stories being passed down from generation to generation....

Maybe not, but I know what I'm missing for my world....If I used the Celtic bardic system for my tribal people, then there'd be a lot of bards walking around singing "Whiskey Lullaby" type songs, followed by the optimistic ones singing "Don't worry. Be happy! You aren't gonna die." Funny, but no. ^_^
