In the ancient world an emperor would have his statue placed in every colony (you don't get many imperial statues in Rome, you get them everywhere else) and his face stamped on every coin (the mass-media of the time) to remind everyone who he was, where honour was due, and how the world worked.

We are to serve something of that purpose for God's creation - pointing towards the one to whom worship is due, and acting as angled mirrors reflecting his mercy, justice, grace, love, protection and care into his world.

I would suggest that within the context of Genesis 1, being made in God's image means is directly tied with exercising dominion over the earth. So, it probably has everything to do with function. I would also say that being made in the image and likeness are one and the same.

1:26 Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness,
so they may rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move on the earth.”
1:27 God created humankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them,
male and female he created them.

Agree...dominion is tied to being in the IMAGE of God. I believe Gen 1:26 & 27 were prophetic of Jesus, the Christ of God the Father. Jesus Christ alone, is in the 'EXPRESS IMAGE' of God!

Heb 1:2-3
2 [God] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
