Evolution does not even claim to show how life began. Only how life changes over time.
(not my usual stand.....I know)

Good,a creationist who knows that ToE doesnt deal with the origin of life.

Why the editorializing about 'even claim" tho?

Its news of the tautological that science does not deal with that for which there is no data.

I've bolded the most important part of this post. The language has changed so much it's impossible to understand it, and yet it's still English. The script is also pretty much illegible in parts, as the standard shape of the letters has changed.

With that in mind, how does your previous point that changing the letters makes us unable to understand the words, somehow invalidates the OP's analogy, make sense?

Yes, it invalidates the OP's analogy. Had he morphed the characters of the text, it would be usless. Just morphing the color had limited effect on the information contained. He may have illustrated the concept of natural selection where invisible text would have destroyed the communication. But the speed of change was irrelevant. And as the text faded or matched the background color...the particular "species" of color was doomed to death (illegible) no matter how slow the process or how long it took.

Such as historical events or life on other planets.

Thank you for this; it's about time. I wish there were a way to harness our technology and get this in front of hundreds and hundreds of people.

Color wheels are a bloody societal virus!

your editorial remarks were about historical evens or life on other planets?

or about how science does not deal with that for which there is no data?

there is none for life on other planets, plenty for historical events.

so what is your point?

I just said that its no big news that Toe isnt about the origin of life, as there is no data-and wondered why youd even bring it up.

Would be simpler that you used the 1 penny per day routine. That way I won't get a headache from trying to find the first blue word.

We'd have to assume the coins didn't evolve, or monetary policy change and abandon coins.

Then you failed to understand the point of the OP.

That's a theory. But nobody can travel in time so Science is limited to current observations and just speculation on past events.

Bzzz Wrong, we're all traveling in time right now.

You've misunderstood the point of the OP then. The point was to show that lots of small changes can add up to one big one. Nothing more, nothing less. Remember the Old English link I posted, the language that has morphed into today would be utterly useless for communicating with an ancient Saxon. So what? This has nothing to do with the OP at all.

ok,
show something real meaningful like from English to Chinese?
what's the matter?
having trouble withthe inbetweens?

I'm glad this was brought up. Language, and the way it changes over time is much better analogy for evolution then Font Color.

People are constantly inventing new words in language, while lesser used words fall out of use. Some of the new words die out, others find a solid place in the language. This is fairly similar to mutations within a species population.

Speciation (The point at which a population of animals differs enough from a previously similar population of animals, that they can not interbreed, and are no longer classified as the same species.) Is VERY similar to how subtle changes in language over time lead to two groups unable to communicate.

For instance, here is a bit of Old English.

"Fæder ūre þū þe eart on heofonum"

Contrasted, here is fairly direct translation to Modern English

"Father of ours, thou who art in heaven"

Another great example is Latin, which broke into several languages after the fall of the Roman Empire. Languages such as Italian, French, and Spanish.

However, at no point did anyone simply stop speaking Latin, then snap to French. The change was gradual. Accents start to vary in the population, words are pronounced slightly differently each generation, new words replace old ones, or old words take on new meaning entirely. Soon two populations who 400 years ago each spoke Latin, can't communicate at all.

This brings me to your question Merlin, as to how English could 'evolve' to Chinese. Keeping the Analogy going, this is just as impossible as explaining how a Cat evolved into a Dog. Both Languages are just the most recent variations, in a long, long list of variation. Though these language may share a common ancestor, they are far, far removed from each other now.

Let me guess... You found this thread on Reddit? ;)

Haha, yes. :) I was curious as to some of the posts in response to this, so I checked out the forum thread.

When I saw Merlin never got an answer to his or her question regarding how the analogy would work in relation to other languages, and that the last post in this thread was only a few days old, I felt like I had to make a brief post.
