I make it the way my mom makes it (which I think is the way my grandmother also made it): switch between layers of macaroni and sliced cheddar (from a block of cheddar) in a casserole dish and put pepper and dabs of butter between each layer.
FTR, I have also made homemade mac and cheese, but just for myself since my hubby is a mac and cheese snob.Recently we have found a great store bought option:
