  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do any LCMS Lutherans read the Devotional books by Sarah Young, the Jesus Calling series? They all have different names, the last one I got was today from Amazon, called Jesus Always. Anyway, I was wondering if it’s ok for LCMS to read them? My pastor isn’t a fan and said that the newer editions weren’t written the same as older ones, plus he doesn’t like that Young writes for Christ. Are they ok to read or not?
Do you trust and respect your Pastor? If so, he is saying no in a nice way.

Oddly enough I emailed him about the books again last night and in his reply THIS time he told me that he’s “never read them” and “as with anything you read you should be sensitive to anything that seems unorthodox, contrary to the Gospel.”

I never really wear jewelry of any kind, though if I had a crucifix necklace I'd wear it. I do want to get a crucifix to put on my wall, as I also wish to acquire icons to have somewhere on my wall.

There is this strange idea that crucifixes are "Catholic" and plain crosses are "Protestant", though I honestly don't know the origins of this. I know that growing up in Evangelical and Pentecostal circles that a common comment was that Catholics depict Jesus on the cross because they don't believe He rose from the dead. Again, I really don't know where that idea originated, but looking back now it's abundantly clear how silly and absurd that was. In saying this, I feel like I should probably go try and find out how these ideas came about.

Besides the one that I wear, we have this one on our living room wall. It's an antique that we found in an old Funeral Home we once owned, and is quite large at 22" long. It is unique in that it depicts Christ before he died, no wound from the spear; He is looking up to heaven, has His fingers raised in benediction... when asked about it, it is an opportunity to share the powerful Gospel of forgiveness, "Father, forgive them for they no not what they do:

We also have a "small" icon wall in our dining room:

I had my crucifix necklace off for about a week, wearing a plain cross instead. I just put my crucifix back on.

I wear one. Also have read Jesus Calling. No harm.
I brought this subject up on a book forum I belong to and someone told me that the books are New Age then gave me this long, drawn out video of a couple (them?) pointing out all the New Age-y things about the books and how Jesus didn’t speak the way Young writes.
