Well you may not believe this but I actually thought I was in the Lutheran Forum when I put that link in here. I had two pages open one in the Lutheran and the other being here. I was waiting on a response from a post in the other forum and didn't even realize I had put it here till now.
Sorry for the error on my part.

I do not understand why you posted this link here in it's own thread without any real discussion or context. This is not usually considered good form.

Do you want to ask any questions about the Orthodox faith, or are you proselytizing?

EDIT: No problem. We all make mistakes. :)

Do you think one can find a good balance between Orthodoxy & Lutheran theology? An acceptablility? Knowing the Reformation was a reaction against the Roman Catholic Western abuses....this never happened i the East. Something to think about.

In Him, david.
Hi Dave, Probably the best thing to read would be a correspondance that began with Luther's assistant Melancthon and the Patriarch (Jeremias, I believe) in the 16th century. The Orthodox & Lutherans ended up parting theologically of course but in civility. Melancthon who I understand was one of a handful of western theologians who had a better grasp of Orthodox concepts like theosis, grace, etc. even tried to construct an "Orthodox" Augsburg confession (of course, it was not Orthodox). see http://stpaulsirvine.org/html/lutheran.htm

That is actually a great, but brief resource. I would also recommend the book, "Augsburg and Constantinople"

It sounds like it would be most interesting. From what I understand an emissary with a reply from Constantinople was killed as an innocent bystander during an armed conflict which accounted for a (20 year?) lapse in communication. Cannot read entire article I linked at this point.

Actually, it was an emissary the Lutherans sent with a Greek translation of the Augsburg Confession, that presumably, never made it to Constantinople. One of the theories is that he was killed en-route, probably in Wallachia. The emissary was actually never heard from again, and so we can only speculate as to his fate.

I think we can agree that there are differences but hopefully we can learn from them and respect each other.
The Roman church at the time had many fallacies and shortcomings at the time of Luther. When he posted the 95 thesis on the Church in Wittenburg he was not posting them there in order to leave the church, and by no means to start another. I know he was put on trial and excommunicated and they would have excecuted him if he had not fled. It was only after all that when it happened. He also did not like the idea of calling the church Lutheran, he favored Evangelical, which is what the Lutheran Congregations in Europe are called even today. Of course the name evangelical has to do more with american pop religion today. I have heard of non-denominational folks that were on vacation in Germany visiting a Evangelish Church only to find it was not full of praise and worship songs with a hour long sermon, but had the liturgy and traditional hymns of the faith.
Blessings to all!

I´m linked to the ones you all suggested to me.

One book I read was Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen´s "One With God"...Salvation as Deification and Justification. In it he said that Luther was alot closer in language with the Orthodox. Another one I have on my wish list is Tuomo Mannermaa´s "Christ Present in Faith: Luther´s view of Justification. Both of these men are Finns and been studying the relationship of Luther with the Orthodox in the Theological School in Helsinki. I think we may be alot closer but it is rigidity and semantics that may get in the way.
