Ezekiel 23:
4 Their names: Oholah the elder and Oholibah her sister;
They were Mine, and they bore sons and daughters.
As for their names, Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem is Oholibah.
5 Oholah played the harlot even though she was Mine;
And she lusted for her lovers, the neighboring Assyrians,
6 Who were clothed in purple, Captains and rulers,
All of them desirable young men, Horsemen riding on horses.
7 Thus she committed her harlotry with them,
All of them choice men of Assyria; and with all for whom she lusted,
With all their idols, she defiled herself.
11 Now although her sister Oholibah saw this, she became more corrupt
in her lust than she, and in her harlotry more corrupt than her sister’s harlotry.
12 She lusted for the neighboring Assyrians,
Captains and rulers, Clothed most gorgeously,
Horsemen riding on horses, All of them desirable young men.
13 Then I saw that she was defiled; Both took the same way.
14 But she increased her harlotry; she looked at men portrayed
on the wall, images of Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion,
15 Girded with belts around their waists, flowing turbans on their heads,
All of them looking like captains, in the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea,
The land of their nativity.
16 As soon as her eyes saw them, she lusted for them
And sent messengers to them in Chaldea.
What is your favorite uniform? I like hockey sweaters.
If I had a lot of money and an inclination to satisfy my desires,
I would have one of every team, even the one here in Arizona,
and they have native American kachina idols on them! Yes,
the temptation is there, but we are warned to keep ourselves from
idols. In order to do so, we have to know what an idol is, since many see
them as ancient superstitious expressions that modern educated people
are not in subjection. Paul explains that covetousness is idolatry. When
you are desirous (the Bible prefers lust, because it sounds sexy) and you
satisfy those desires (usually by spending money, which for most would be
a sacrifice), you are committing to idolatry.
Colossians 3:5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth:
fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
So how do you keep yourself from idols? For starters, don't spend money on things
you don't need. If you want something that you don't need....flee from idolatry.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love
of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride
of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God
abides forever.
