CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What do I think? I tend to get frustrated reading many of these debates because there never seems to be any resolution (am I wrong about this? I don't stop in here real often) . But I do enjoy reading them once in a while.

It's a pretty good group really. You can not really teach the truth, people have to discover it for themselves. Sometimes it takes time, even two or three years for some people to get it figured out.

To answer the implicit question of this thread (why are lurkers lurking?), I'd say the reason for me is... time: I tried to get involved in some arguments some time ago, but it takes time to follow a discussion, build logical arguments and present them clearly (especially when it's not in your native language). Oftentimes I came back to a thread and found out that the topic had moved so much that my answer would be off-topic.
So I stopped posting, but I'm still very interested in many threads, although I don't have the time to follow them "live".
To answer the implicit question of this thread (why are lurkers lurking?), I'd say the reason for me is... time: I tried to get involved in some arguments some time ago, but it takes time to follow a discussion, build logical arguments and present them clearly (especially when it's not in your native language). Oftentimes I came back to a thread and found out that the topic had moved so much that my answer would be off-topic.

Well, when I said I would get banned for saying that I was an atheist I was thinking of another forum. Sorry about that. I should say that when I "shake my head and sigh" at what I read here it is just as often at reading the words of the supporters of my viewpoints as it is the opponents.
For two reasons:
(1) Both sides of the debate tend to be judgemental and rude in their responses to one another.
(2) The factual/logical errors that are rapant and rarely resolved make it seem as if very few in this forum have any idea what they are talking about.
(Now not to be insulting or judgemental myself it may very well be that I don't know what you are talking about.)
So to the reason I am a lurker. I spend too much time reading the stuff written here and have way to much to say to the people writing and not nearly enough time to do any of it. Also, I see from reading threads how much work it takes to try to get ones voice heard, and frankly I am just too lazy to bother.
Thanks for reading my blather, perhaps we'll meet again.

Sometimes, not very often but at times I have taken up to three hours to put one post together. To some degree maybe we are all a little bit lazy. Or we just don't have the time it would take to really do the research to answer all of the questions properly.
My main objective here is that I want to put together a science program for 6 to 8th graders. So even if it takes me 3 hours, still I have a question I can ask a student that will keep them busy for a while. For example, I could ask: What is the association between the spindown rate of the earth and the receding rate of the moon?
I would much rather give a student a math problem to solve, then to make them memorize a bunch of stuff that they will forget all to soon.
My dream is to get the whole world up to at least a 6th grade level in the area of science. It would be nice as a added bonus if they could function at that level in english. Then there will be those who want to go on to advance from a 6 th to a 8 th grade level.
The old theory is that you can not start to work with kids before the age of 3. But I know that you can start to work with them at age 1.
I have toyed with the idea of maybe getting Phd's up to a 6th grade level outside of their area of study. But then I thought, no, that maybe to hard. We all know how hard of a time Einsteins teachers had with him. Most of them just seem to be content to stay at a third grade level.

A reminder. (Not to you.) Ad hominem, genetic fallacy, appeal to emotion, and appeal to popularity are all fallacies. Don't use them. They prove nothing. And this applies to everyone. Christians and atheists are not exempt!

I know it seems that way lucyP, but I personally get a great deal out of these seemingly endless discussions. I feel pretty confident in what I believe, but sometimes when I post a thougth, someone comes back with a valid point that forces me to rethink things. If I am missing something, I would like to know it... if I am correct, I want to be able to justify it logically and at least to my own satisfaction.

You are teaching then JohnR7? I am studying to be a teacher as we speak, which is where 90% of my time goes, but it is cool to have met you on here. Perhaps you can enlighten me with some accumulated wisdom.
I think you may hear a bit more from me in the future. I certainly will avoid ad hominems. Don't get me wrong I am sure mot of the posters here do not descend to such things, but the few that do tend to make a big impression. Well, here's to future postings. At least enough to get me up to 15 so as I can pick a more interesting picure.
