Luke Chapter 18 verses 18-19

18. Now a certain ruler asked Him saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

19. So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is God.

Isn't Jesus denying that he was God in this passage? Or am I missing something?

No.

Did the man know that Jesus was the Messiah? No.

Did the man know that Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit without sin? No

Jesus knew that the man looked upon Him as being a human being, a Teacher. Jesus was correcting His perception that some human beings where Good.

No human being is good only God is good.

You must understand it from the perception of the man. He was calling what he thought was another man Good. Of course Jesus was Good but Jesus knew that the Man did not know who He really was.

Agreed. Jesus knew what was in the man's heart and mind, not just what he said. Thus, Jesus knew this man was going to a teacher (a rabbi) and calling this teacher "good". Jesus took this opportunity to point out the depravity of all humanity.

If this was all we had we might think that, but it's not all we have. The response isn't addressing the question "who are you", but "what should I do?". Jesus, as he frequently does, refuses to directly answer the question but turns it around and gives a cryptic response, effectively saying "you are asking the wrong questions".

This is how Jesus explain He is God:

Jesus identified himself as being God by redirected and attributed the images and symbols seen as God’s belonging to His own persona. Traditionally, when the prophets spoke the words or message of the Lord to the people, they say “The LORD says,” or ‘The LORD judges’. However, Jesus spoke and acted as God Himself. For example in the story of Jesus meeting Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10, Jesus says, “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” In saying this, he quotes Ezekiel 34:15-16:‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says:.....“‘I will feed My flock, and I will make them lie down,’ says the Lord God. 16 I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the strong, and feed them in judgment."

Jesus declares He is God who is seeking and shepherding the lost flocks of Israel.

I agree the man saw Jesus as teacher not God. But he was also looking for a works based way to salvation. (what can I do) Salvation is not earned because no man will ever be 'good' enough hence Jesus pointed out what was in his heart was being good enough to get to heaven, but he was missing the point. Through Jesus only can we can be saved.
