  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

Why did Jesus feel the need to learn the scriptures if the scriptures were inspired by Him in the first place anyway?

To me, it appears He wasn't learning but questioning them about their views of the Scriptures. Notice the part about Him answering them. Thoughts?

[Young LT] 46 And it came to pass, after three days, they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them and questioning them, 47 and all those hearing Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.

It doesn't say that Jesus was learning the Scriptures, it says that he was listening to the teachers and asking them questions. But Pete is right - Jesus "made himself nothing" (Philippians 2:7). He was born as a baby, and was like us in every way, except that he did not sin. Babies are not born quoting Scripture, so even Jesus would have had to learn like everyone else.

I'm not sure he had to learn the scriptures, but it's possible. That could have been part of his human nature. His divine nature undoubtedly gave him the ability to understand scripture far beyond that of any man.
The Jews were also the ones entrusted with the Oracles of the LORD.

Romans 3:1 What, then, [is] the superiority of the Jew? or what the profit of the circumcision? 2 much in every way; for first, indeed, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God;

47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
48"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."

49Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."

Here we see Jesus displaying omnipotence (or omnipresence or both).

Obviously he hasn't given up all his divine powers.

I wouldn't say "gave up". I think "decided not to use" would be better.
I have been studying "kenosis" lately. It is a very interesting subject. He "emptied Himself" to become like us. There are a few different views on exactly how much of His divine attributes displayed on earth were His, and how much He recieved from the relationship to the Father.

Peter knew that Ananias and Sapphira had lied, would you say the same of Him or that he recieved the info from God?

I think St. Athanasius said it best when talking about theosis, "The Son of God became man, that we might become God."

Sometimes it is pretty difficult picturing Him, a "New Creation", as a "baby", as Adam was created full grown I think.

Genesis 5:5 And they are becoming all of days of Adam which he lives nine hundreds year and thirty year and he is dying.

1 Corinthians 15:22 for even as in the Adam all are dying, so also in the Christ all shall be being made alive,

I think we often excuse our failures by sayin that we cannot live such a life because we are not God and He was. But seeing His power to live such a life as coming from His relationship with the Father should make us strive for that relationship more, so we can become more like Him. It is a very interesting subject.

 I'm not sure how the verses you quoted fit in to this. Are you saying Jesus wasn't born as a baby, and the Gospel accounts are therefore wrong?

I agree it is amazing though, how the God of creation could fit himself into that tiny body.

I think we do. Jesus knows who this person is, knows he is righteous and without fault, and tells him that he saw him under the tree.

Omnipotence means able to do everything, and omnipresence means able to be everywhere. I'm not quite sure how this shows either.

William Barclay says that to the Jew the fig tree stood for peace, and it was traditional for people to sit and meditate under its leafy branches, which no doubt gave some privacy. I'm not saying that Jesus didn't know people's hearts what they were thinking, and what was going to happen. He certainly did to some extent because he predicted Peter's betrayal and Judas' denial, so he could have known, by some revelation, what kind of a man Nathanael was. But it might just have been that Jesus saw here a man of prayer and peace.

Also, don't forget that this incident happened after the start of his ministry, when he had been baptised in the Jordan and affirmed as God's Son. This is not quite the same as saying that he was born knowing everything.

Look at that scripture very well.. The scripture said He was there listening to them and asking them questions.. They were amazed at His understanding ect ect.. Where else would He want to be than hearing His Fathers word spoken...

Sorry, I meant to say omniscience. My bad.
