Hello, all. What does a Christian do if he or she has low confidence? I’ve a dream of becoming a nurse but get doubtful then start thinking that I can't achieve it or fear that my feelings of incompetence will hold me back. I’ve been told ever since I was a young girl that I wasn't intelligent and couldn't accomplish things of importance.
I do believe with God all things are possible but there are times when those negative thoughts overpower what is true. I feel quite sad now.

There's two different categories of answer.

If it's lack of confidence in something that God has promised in Scripture, the answer is that the Scripture is more authoritative on the will of God than your own doubt and imagination, and you need to choose to believe the Scripture.

If it's lack of confidence in something that God hasn't promised, then the answer is different. Remember what you have done well. Remember that God gives opportunity (Deuteronomy 8:18) and that he will never leave or forsake you, whether you succeed or fail (Hebrews 13:5).

It's not too late for you to discover your strengths and believe in yourself. Do you currently live with people who encourage you, or who discourage you?

PrincessLDG,

Every person who succeeds, feels exactly like you do, on the way there.....

The Mountain is the path.
What stands in your way is the way there.
The Problem is the doorway.
There is more to life than watching it go by.

Becoming a nurse is very doable, it’s not a far out or impractical dream like being an astronaut or an award winning actress.

I think the greatest remedy for poor confidence is cultivating positive relationships that help to sure up your sense of self worth.

Ridiculous people and poor quality treatment has added towards your anxiety and poor self image, it’s only natural that sensible people who treat you well can help as a kind of exposure therapy.

You’re not incapable and your dreams are well within your reach.

The negatives will start to disappear as you start to accomplish things towards nursing.

I have many friends who are nurses and several of them had a rough start similar to yours.

You need to quit thinking about it and start moving towards achieving that goal….The advantage you have is .....you are a daughter of the most high God with Christ in you ….there is nothing within reason that you cannot do.

Check into CNA classes on line or near you…this field is in high demand and many classes are free. It’s going to take some work, but if you have the desire ….it will motivate you through it.

Decision – Desire – Details – Deliverance

Make the decision ….in making the decision it will start to build the desire.

With that desire in your heart the details will start to come into focus

As you accomplish the details the deliverance of what held you back will dissipate

FWIW, I know a nurse who to my mind is, well, not playing with a full deck. Yet apparently she is competent in that field, been a nurse for many, like maybe 25 years, and has been fired once for losing her temper, (yelling at a patient who deserved being yelled at) —not for being less than able to do her job.

From personal experience I can tell you that motivation is a major part of the ability to learn. If that is what you want to do, go for it! Don't listen to people who tell you what you can't do.

No, I don't live with people who discourage me. I do live with some who encourage me. Words can hurt but have to be strong.

Yes, I have a strong desire to do nursing. I love helping others and learning about the human body. :)

Whoever told you that was misinformed. What God has in store for you is of cosmic and eternal importance.

God's plan for your life is absolutely not insignificant. Whatever God has in store for you will be, for you and everyone you touch, radical and transformative. That's how God always works. Every time.
Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you 2 Corinthians 10:4

When your confidence flags remember who and what you are. The kingdom of God is within you. I pray that God will give you a glimpse of your true nature.

I am praying that your dreams bear fruit :)

When negative thoughts come, especially if it’s night and I’m trying to sleep, I say Psalm 23, then tell the evil spirits to get lost, because Jesus is here now.
In the daytime I pretty much tell them to get lost, and go back to my business.
It has worked for me. They don’t like Jesus.

Just start your path to becoming a nurse. One step at a time. Each time you complete a step it will tangibly increase your confidence for the next task.

a roommate in college was a physical therapy major
PT is very competitive & she struggled with the classes

she switched majors to nursing!
she was able to handle the nursing courses

if nursing is your career choice, you can do it
if you need help, there are tutors

best to you

If you are still at school/college is there a career advice person you could talk to, could you talk to your class teacher about whether you could do a nursing course.
Contact the colleges doing this course and find out what it costs and what educational qualifcations you need.
A question for you. are you caperble of studying hard, spending time reading and ritting out your texts books or doing extra reading to ensure you have the knowledge needed to qualify.

If the answers are all yes then go for it and do not talkto those who gave you such damaging negative comments.

That desire will achieve what you want! The desire to become a nurse will carry you through the entire process. My wife is a nurse (actually a nurse-midwife) so I know whereof I speak.

DO NOT LISTEN TO PEOPLE who tell you that you aren't intelligent and can't accomplish things of importance. YOU CAN AND WILL BECOME A NURSE!

If you have that much desire to become a nurse just keep God in it. You may well be sensing Him in it already that you have this desire. God is faithful and while His ultimate goal is for your eternal purpose He has us working in this life too. Nobody knows you better than Him.
Someone mentioned Psalm 23, it's good to have a night time scripture like that to which the same Psalm has carried me through many a night time trial and doubt to where I just fell back to sleep, you must believe He is for you and not against you. Psalm 91 and 100 are good too. But 23 is many peoples Psalm to lean on in troubles and doubt. Worth memorizing some scripture at any rate.

You might have to study to become a nurse. Dreaming is too easy.

Where are you in the education process? How did you do in high school? A friend of mine's daughter didn't get into the nursing program where we both graduated from years ago, so she instead got a degree in biology, then applied to a nursing program after proving herself, and now she is in an a nursing program. She had the drive and determination, and she didn't give up. If God has called and equipped you to be a nurse, then trust in the Lord to see you through it, and refuse to listen to the skepticism and be determined to succeed. If needed, start at a local community college, and take some preparatory classes to get up to speed. Where there is a will, there is a way. I almost bailed out of electrical engineering half way through, but decided to fight it and not give in, and eventually I graduated. My room mate failed calculus I 4 times before he passed, and he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. From most of what I've seen, if you are willing to do the hard work, you will succeed. My wife struggled with intermediate accounting, but went on to get her CPA and Master of Accounting degree.

You will find as time progresses that God's love will build greater confidence in you. I used to have real problems with self-doubt, but over the years, as I have tried to follow God He has given me strength. Am I perfect? far from it, but I am better than I used to be.

I think it's important to have a combination of encouragement and wise counsel. That doesn't include saying yes to everything to appease someone. If someone believes nursing is a stretch you should ask them why. Then you can determine if their opinion is based on facts or lack of belief.

Nursing is very competitive. There's more demand than availability. You need a high GPA to gain entry to most programs. The shortage ended years ago. At bare minimum, 3.3 but realistically, 3.5.

Most hospitals want a BSN. Community colleges are less expensive. But the waiting lists are longer and entry can be more difficult. Review the requirements for your area of interest. MSN is the standard for some. Are you willing to invest the time and money to acquire it? You'll assume a lot of debt.

AllNurses is a good resource. Poke around and ask questions. Follow the boards for your state. Look at the admission threads. They tell you what it takes to get in.
