  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Eve turned around to look at him, still holding up the apple. She slowly took the knife with her free hand, but didn't immediately start working on carving off the flesh. She knew he was trying to be light and tease. Maybe even to make her feel better, but she didn't know how to respond. Of course it sounded unbelievably stupid. However, that didn't stop a lot of people from doing certain things.

"Of course I agree," Eve said, forcing herself to sound overly confident, like usual. She began to cut the apple into slices. "You shouldn't be with anyone, especially an elf." Once she finished cutting off a couple slices, she tossed the knife at the table. The blade stuck in the wood.

"Besides," She continued, taking a tiny bite of the fruit. "You're with me now...remember?"

Samir was relieved when she agreed with him. Finally she was beginning to be less hostile towards him. That was, until she opened her mouth again. "You shouldn't be with anyone, especially an elf." He hadn't thought of it that way before. Of course, he'd had women since becoming a vampire, but most of them became his victims before anything remotely resembling love could have possibly come about. That was the first hunting strategy the other vampires taught him as it was the easiest way to find blood....seducing members of the opposite sex before turning them into prey. Although, he hadn't had to use that tactic since meeting Eve. They killed enough people during the course of her mission to keep him fed.

"Besides, you're with me now....remember?" She asked, taking a small bite of her apple.

She said it almost as a command, but he took it as a good sign. After all, she wouldn't be reminding him where he belonged if she didn't intend on keeping him around. He nodded his agreement. "I haven't forgotten." He paused, watching her eat her apple. As she ate, he grabbed a chair and spun it around, sitting backwards on it and resting his arms across the back of the chair, staring at her intently. "So does this mean I'm forgiven?" He couldn't help but tease.

She tried not to, she really did, but she couldn't help the grin that came on her face. Leaning back against the wooden table, facing him, she tossed the apple at him, intending to smack him in the head. It was also her chance to feel that powerful emotion she'd come to love whenever she had full reign of attention. "Not necessarily. Why? What would you do to make sure I have forgiven you?"

Samir caught the apple right before it smacked him on the forehead, his heart leaping from the surprise and also from the smile that Eve had given him. Yes, it was going to be all right now. "Not necessarily. Why? What would you do to make sure I have forgiven you?" She asked, her eyes playful.

He tossed the apple into the air, caught it again, and then took a bite, letting his fangs sink into the apple's skin on the other side. He got no nourishment from the apple, of course, but he could still enjoy the taste of food. Samir shrugged his bare shoulders and stood, walking over to her and gently placing the apple into her palm. "Whatever it is you ask of me, My Lady. Your wish is my command." He grinned down at her, one eyebrow raised.

Still grinning, Eve held onto the apple, staring up into his playful face. Thinking, she tried to come up with a good response to his teasing or even something for him to really do to prove his loyalty to her. Suddenly, it came to her. Too quickly. Her grin suddenly dropped, her hold on the apple tightening. Yes, yes, it could work! But no...it was dangerous. Plus, she hadn't attempted the spell in years. But still, if he agreed...

Eve suddenly stood up straight, setting the apple on the table behind her. "Follow me," She said as she walked passed him towards the stairs. She didn't bother to turn around to see if he was following as she took each step as a time; she knew he would be.

She walked into the loft on the second floor, going straight to what little potions, herbs, and other necessities she brought with. Kneeling on the floor, she rummaged through them in their little pouches. It wasn't even certain if she had everything she needed. Though spells really didn't require a lot of physical items, it was mainly about mental, and that she had a lot of.

Finally she came up with the few items needed, and of course her spell book. She turned around to face Samir, still on her knees, and laid out the necessary belongings before her. "Samir...I want you to bind yourself to me."

At first concerned to see the smile slip from her face, his anxiety eased when she told him to follow her. He obeyed, letting her lead him up to the second story loft. His eyebrows furrowed in curiosity. Why was she leading him upstairs?

She knelt on the ground and began searching amongst her things. Was she going to make him drink a potion? A truth serum perhaps? Or possibly a poison that would test his strength, not actually killing him but proving he was willing to harm himself to prove his loyalty? She was proficient in dark magic and he wouldn't put it past her to torture him that way. His heart pounded in his chest, but he continued to step closer. He trusted her, ready for whatever she may ask of him.

Finally she looked up. "Samir...I want you to bind yourself to me."

He frowned, unsure of what that meant. He crouched down in front of her and let his eyes wander across the trinkets splayed out before her. Finally he met her gaze again. He was willing to do anything she asked, but only on one condition. "If I do this thing you ask......will you never doubt me again?"

Eve watched him, thinking. She thought of an elf maiden and Samir, years ago rolling around in the grass, laughing as they did. She thought of him running into her again, the love the naive elf wanted so badly. She thought of Samir remembering someday; remembering his past life. Unlike hers, where she did remember but tried desperately to forget, his memories might actually be worth remembering. She thought of him leaving her with all the plans and plots they had gone over only to betray her like everyone else for their own selfish desires.

Then she thought of the dream. It had seemed so real. Even then she could feel his warm breath on her skin as his fangs pierced into her flesh, blood dripping down her neck. She shivered. She couldn't stand someone betraying her again, leaving her to try and pick up the pieces. No, Samir would never do that to her, and Eve was going to make sure of it.

"I will never doubt you again," Eve said softly. "What do you say?"

Samir searched her face for truth. He thought he had proven himself before only to have her turn around and doubt him again. What made this different? It must be very powerful magic she was about to perform. It made him a bit nervous. But the outcome would be worth it if she could fully trust him. Then maybe she wouldn't feel the need to argue with him anymore and they could concentrate on fulfilling her mission. "Then tell me what I need to do." He said, his voice soft and yet firm....his decision made.

"Do?" Eve half asked, half stated. "Nothing. Just sit there." She began to go through her treasures, placing the right amount of each thing in a small bowl on the ground then taking her fingers and mixing it together, pressing it into paste. This took some time, but once it was done she reached out to grab Samir's hands and started rubbing the green colored paste all over his palms. Once she was done with his, she did the same to hers.

The spell book had already been opened and laid neatly at her side. Eve glanced down, skimmed through it then turned back towards Samir. She was nervous. She could feel her hands shaking. The last time she had done this it had taken so much energy out of her she could hardly breathe, and then she hadn't even been involved personally in the binding. Plus, she remembered her teachers' words, "The more powerful the spell, the more energy you give up, and the more life you lose." So much was at stake; her life. Samir's life. But it was worth it; it was all worth it to know that she could never be betrayed by at least one person.

Taking in a deep breath, Eve grabbed Samir's hands, holding them up before him. She then slowly pressed her own palms into his, delicately moving her fingers to nestle in between his own. She could see her hands shaking, but refused to look right at them. Instead she focused her attention on Samir's eyes.

It was all set. All she had to do was say the words, and let fate decide the rest.

"I hope you're ready," Eve said, trying to sound lighthearted. "It's going to be torture." With that she inhaled deeply and began to whisper words of the unknown; ancient letters that hadn't been heard from in thousands of years.

Once she was done their hands began to glow. At first she felt them burning and she winced slightly at the tinge of pain. But it only lasted for a few seconds. Before long the faint glow was rising, encasing their entire bodies. Eve felt her heart lurch, pressing hard against her chest as though struggling to jump out. She screamed. Pain. So much pain. Eve fell into Samir's chest to support herself, her fingernails digging deep into his hands as her mouth continued to open, now in a silent scream.

She now understood what it meant when they said a few seconds could last for years because that's exactly how she felt. When she felt as though she couldn't go on, it stopped. Eve gasped, her hands falling to her sides, and her body growing limp against Samir's. Suddenly she felt like sleeping; sleeping and never waking up. She allowed her eyes to close and her body to rest as it fought to gain back its strength.

Samir felt Eve's hands trembling as she took them in her own, pressing her palms to his. He, however, remained strong. "I hope you're ready," She gave him the tiniest glimmer of a smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. She was scared. "It's going to be torture."

Samir took a deep breath at the same time she did, and watched her lips move as words poured from them. His hands began to tingle first as they started to heat up, a red glow seeming to come from between their palms. The tingling turned to burning and he had the urge to let go of her hands. Instead, he set his jaw and gripped her hands tighter. No way was he turning back now. The tolerable burning turned to white-hot agony as it traveled from his hands to his wrists, up his arms and into his chest, finally coiling around his heart before exploding down into his stomach and up into his skull. He gritted his teeth against the wail of torment that threatened to escape his throat, his hands clenched so tightly around Eve's it seemed impossible they would ever separate.

And then it was over. The relief meshed with fatigue hit him like a wave crashing against a cliff. He felt Eve fall gently against him, her soft hair tickling the hollow of his throat. He gasped for air and opened his eyes, not even realizing he had squeezed them shut. Feeling it was safe now, he released her hands and placed his on her back, cradling her against him. She wasn't moving. His breath caught in his throat. Had it killed her? No. He could feel her warm breath against his chest. He let out a sigh and brushed back the hair from her eyes with one hand so he could look down upon her face. "Eve?" He breathed, his throat feeling like it was full of stickers. "Are you all right?" Whatever spell she had performed, it had taken the life right out of her and he wasn't entirely sure it hadn't gone wrong somehow.

His voice. His touch. "Eve?" Where was she? Her head hurt. "Are you all right?" A fuzzy figure appeared over her. He was leaning over, black hair falling into his eyes, his hands on her shoulders shaking her. "Eve!" He sounded more urgent now. "Wake up!"

She could see him clearly now. Roden. A young Roden. He smiled, obviously relieved she had opened her eyes.

"Ugh. What happened?" Eve asked. Her voice was shrill, girlish.

"You fell," Roden answered as he moved aside and pointed up to a tree. He then turned back to look down at her. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"Mmm. I think so." Eve attempted to sit up, but as soon as she did she felt the throb on her head. "Ow." She rubbed the front of her forehead furiously. "It hurts."

"I bet it does." Roden smirked. "You have a huge bump there!"

Eve allowed her fingers to delicately go over a small bump on her forehead. "Oh no..."

"That's okay though," The boy quickly assured her. "It could have been worse."

"I guess."

"You climbed pretty far." His nose then wrinkled. "For a girl, I mean."

Eve glared at him and attempted to punch him in his shoulder with her tiny fist. It didn't do much but make him laugh. He then reached out and tousled her hair. "Oh, Eve. Don't ever change."

~*~

His voice. His touch. "Eve?" Where was she? Her head hurt. "Are you all right?"

Eve forced her eyes to flutter open. She knew that voice. Samir. It was Samir. She groaned as she slowly pulled herself up to a semi sitting position and looked at him, her eyes half closed. His figure was a bit fuzzy, but good enough.

"Yes," She was surprised at how soft her voice was. "It just...It takes a lot out of me." She swayed a bit then jerked, making herself stay upright. "Are you okay?"

He let her pull away from him slightly as she sat up, but he kept his hands rested lightly on her shoulders to steady her for she didn't look quite stable yet. Her eyelids were heavy and her eyes couldn't seem to focus on him. "It just.....it takes a lot out of me." This he could see. "Are you okay?"

He nodded, the small movement making his head throb. "Besides feeling like I drank too much rum last night? I'm fine." He attempted to joke. Then he relapsed into seriousness. Getting shakily to his feet, he let his hands run down her arms and grasped her wrists, pulling her to her feet with him. He then slipped one arm around her waist, supporting her weight as she leaned against his side. "Come on, you need to sleep." He led her over to a lumpy straw mattress laying on the floor in one corner of the loft and gently lowered her onto it. He then collapsed beside her, his upper torso on the mattress while his waist and legs remained on the wooden floor, the effort of walking those few feet exhausting him. He laid his head down next to her shoulder, wanting nothing more than to sleep.

Eve was so exhausted she didn't bother to argue. She also didn't bother to question him, or herself, on why she couldn't feel him grasp her wrists. She was just tired. So tired. She didn't know how she made it to the mattress, but somehow Samir had gotten her over there. Immediately both of them fell onto it. In normal circumstances Eve would have complained how hard and uncomfortable it was, but now she found it absolutely heavenly.

Her head rolled and she let her cheek rest on Samir's forehead, closing her eyes. As odd as it sounded, they were now one. He could never escape her, she could never escape him. That's how it was going to be for the rest of their lives. And in some way Eve found satisfaction in knowing no one else could ever have him. He was hers, like a possession, but so much sweeter.

She remembered trying to smile, not sure if she did, and then her mind went blank into a deep sleep.

((Well, here is it. I shall have a description of his little portion of land for you soon, Light. Most likely in Necromion, though possibly up in the mountains of the Dwarven continent you mentioned.))

Arsyth Sylvanyth stepped back to examine the work he had done, smiling wickedly in assurance. The room was dark save for a row of candles on the table before him that graced his handsome – albeit cold – features with flickering light. His eyes shimmered wetly, the pupils odd and too large to be human. It was only temporarily, however, and he would look like any other man as soon as he took the ring off. It enhanced his vision, allowing him to see things he would not regularly see without the aid of a magician’s glass. The formula was perfect, and required masterful precision to get it right.

A disemboweled rat lay sprawled on the table, it’s right foreleg sliced cleanly off at the joint, and it’s left eye removed delicately. It was not a grotesque act, but rather a slow and careful one. Two rats, mutilated and cut apart were thrown aside; two failed attempts before this. A chuckle escaped his lips in how well it all worked. The rat missing an arm and an eye was yet another part to the puzzle, and the eye would be used later. Without a thought, Arsyth disposed of the arm over his shoulder and turned to his familiar, Kyrynn.

On a nearby chair a small skeleton of an imp perched, eyeless gaze fixed on his master. He regarded the arm that was thrown with growing interest, but laziness stayed his feet. Three feet tall and armed with a poison-tipped tail, Kyrynn was a dangerous creature, but nonetheless a servant of Arsyth. “So it is nearing completion then, I’ll wager.” the imp said in a high voice.

Arsyth nodded. “The Queen of the Caverns will be pleased.” The Queen he was referring to was the queen of the driders; centaurian spider creatures that shared his region. She was the goddess of them all, and her word was the final. His plan was to use her own legions to take the world in his fist, but she required the potion. The Curse of Much Measure, as she called it, Gullek an Berrik in her foul tongue. Silently, he looked over the regents again, awaiting their use in the great plan. Leaf of the Hopquick plant, tooth of a dire wolf, tentacle of a displacer beast, feather of a Pegasus, and a rat’s carefully cut body. The other three parts of the rite were yet to be discovered, save the rat’s eye, which he now had. Thirty years had he labored for the parts, and now, he finally had them.

A sacrifice and the eye of a beholder were the last two pieces, neither under his control. He had attempted once to attain a beholder’s eye, but it was in that that caused a hole to be burnt in his skin to the ribs. He looked normal on the outside, but were he to remove his shirt one could see the ribs where muscle and flesh was ripped away. No, nothing a mortal would have, but he was no mortal when he thought about it.

The sacrifice was the platform on which the potion would be created, but the rite was specific in the fact that the victim must be willing, and must be a woman. There were few women he knew, and it was interesting at what time he had received the message from one. He disliked her, but it was all a game of power. Of greed.

Thoughtfully, he retrieved the handwritten note from the woman, signed with elegant letters, “Sirena”. One of his numerous servants had brought it to him the day before, saying it had come in by raven. She wanted to see him again, and talk.

“Are you going?” the imp asked him impatiently, and Arsyth again nodded.

Setting the parchment down, he looked at his magic timewatch – a device that kept the angle at which the sun was in the sky. It was almost noonday, and nearly the time he was supposed to be there. He could arrive in a moment’s notice, but it was the ability to think things over that he wanted. But that which he wanted he usually did not have. An ironic part of life.

Turning, he removed the ring of enhanced sight from his finger and put it away in the folds of his cloak. He was in black from head to toe; such was the color of his fortress and possibly the very lining on the outside of his heart. He pulled the hood of his cloak up over his head and he was gone, disappearing into the very shadow.

Sirena paced on the smooth river rocks that made the pathways that twisted wildly through the castle's gardens. She was waiting, nervously if anything, for Arsyth, she had sent word for him to meet her here, but would he? He had been distant the last time they had met, and she hoped he had settled his mind on whatever had been troubling him so much then.

Her thin hands intertwining her long pale fingers within each other, as her feet gently padded along the rocks, back and forth, back and forth. She had arrived early, in anticipation, knowing he would show up promptly by the minute they were to meet, if he had wanted to, he could be so tempermental at times.

Sitting down gently on the wooden swing that hung solitarily from an old oak tree a few feet from the pathway she had been pacing on. Gently letting her feet swing her body and the swing back and forth as she hung on the rough robes, letting the corse material scrap at the soft skin of her palms. The wind gently brushing through her long locks like lovers whispers licking at her ears.

She closed her eyes for a moment, resting her head against the rope on the left side of her, looking at the ground, and the small fraile flowers that had started to sprout from the ground, ants happily carrying their afternoon meal back to their ant hill, a bee quietly going about his business on one of the early spring blooms.

She took in a deep breath, smelling the fresh fragrances around her, and she waited.

Arsyth winked into existence, appearing a hundred feet from where Sirena stood. He looked around for a moment and then spotted her, falling into a brisk walk toward her. She stood there, innocently, but he felt no remorse as he made his way to her, spreading a fake smile. Luck was shining on him that day, and the Queen of the Caverns was likely very pleased.

Sirena gazed at Arsyth, a smile playing at her lips, joyfully. "You came." she whispered, her heart beating like a thousand butterflies caught in her chest. It was intoxicating the feeling that filled her from seeing him again after so long. "How have you been?" she asked carefully, it has been a month since they had been face to face, to her it seemed like years since she had gazed upon his face.

Eve was so exhausted she didn't bother to argue. She also didn't bother to question him, or herself, on why she couldn't feel him grasp her wrists. She was just tired. So tired.

A high-pitched squeal of delight. A mirthful giggle. Two eyes staring up at him in playful challenge. And then she was running from him, her long blond hair and soft yellow dress both billowing out behind her like wisps of golden vapor. Another giggle and she turned around to see if he was following. He then recognized her, his beautiful elven maiden. He felt laughter bubble up inside him as he sprang into action, his footsteps falling hard on the soft grass as he pursued her. He was faintly aware of sunlight caressing his skin and, with a jolt of realization, saw that it wasn't hurting him. But no matter. He had more important things to think about....like catching his elf before she reached that stone wall surrounding her land.

Too late. She ran through the gate, spun around and slammed it behind her. He skidded to a stop in front of the gate and watched her smile triumphantly. "Now what?" She asked him, clasping her hands behind her back and tilting her chin up, teasing him as she took a few steps back from the fence.

The stone wall only reached up to his elbows and the iron gate was only chest-high. He backed up, spreading his arms, displaying her victory. "You've won! How can I possibly catch you now?" Then, without warning, he sped towards the gate and vaulted over it. He heard her gasp of surprise as she turned to run, but he was too quick. He grabbed her arm and spun her around so that she slammed into his chest. He caught her in his arms, their faces inches apart, both breathing hard from the run.

"You cheated." She murmured, her face in a pout, looking up at him entreatingly.

He chuckled. "I didn't cheat." He kissed the tip of her nose lightly. "I didn't have to." He breathed, his lips moving to her soft cheek. "You let me win." He buried his nose in the silky hair behind her ear, pressing his mouth to her neck just below her jawline. He felt her tremble and take a sharp breath before she pushed away, giggling, her cheeks flushed, whether from the chase or his kisses, he wasn't sure.

"Brennan!" She exclaimed, stepping back from him with a smile. "You are too bold!"

He threw back his head and laughed. "Bold? I caught you! I deserved my reward!"

She pouted again. "No, you cheated." She turned her back on him, folding her arms across her chest and feigning anger.

He chuckled and stepped towards her. "Tessa...." He began, calling her by his nickname for her.

"Who's Tessa?" He stopped at the voice now issuing from the woman. It wasn't the same. She spun around and now he found himself face-to-face with Eve, her eyes burning. "How could you do this, Samir? After all I have done for you! After you bound yourself to me!"

He took a step back, surprised. "Eve? But...I..."

"I would be very careful of the words that leave your lips next, Samir. The only reason I haven't killed you already is because we are bound together." She let out a sharp, disgusted laugh. "But then, you are dead to me." She gestured around her. "Where is your precious elf now, Samir? The one you chose over your oath to me? She's not here, is she?" It was obvious she wasn't, so he didn't answer, his heart pounding in his chest. Eve spoke again. "No, she's not here. She left you. And so will I. And you will be alone again. It's less than you deserve for betraying me, but it will suffice." She wrinkled her nose in disgust and turned, walking away from him.

"Eve! Wait!" He called, taking a step forward but finding he could go no further. She didn't stop, didn't even glance back. "Eve!"

"Eve...." Samir mumbled, waking himself up. He opened his eyes and found himself staring at a pale shoulder tucked into dark robes. Eve. He pushed himself up and sat back against the wall at the head of the mattress. He bent his knees and rested his elbows on them, taking a deep breath, his mind spinning. The dream had seemed so real! He ran his hands over his face and rubbed his eyes. But no, it couldn't be. He was here now, with Eve. No Tessa.

His heart leapt. Tessa. He remembered her name! He shook his head. No. It was simply a name he had given her in his dream. It meant nothing. Nothing. Samir leaned his head back against the wall and gazed down at Eve's sleeping form. So peaceful. He sat there watching her sleep, a calm coming over him. Yes, this was where he belonged.

((Hope you don't mind, CJF, but I gave Trista a pet name...Tessa.;) Bah. Now I have to go. Wretched job I have to be on time for. Grrr.))
