  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Love or hate?

In John 13:34-35 Jesus commanded us to love one another: in this way, all men will recognize his disciples.

[34] A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
[35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

In Luke 14:26 he says though that you cannot be his disciple unless you hate your father and mother, your siblings, your children, your wife.

[26] If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Not too difficult, but there's no question to answer here. If you want commentary on this verse, you might want to take it to your congregational area or General Theology. Is there a comment or question you'd like to post on this?

The Messiah's use of the term 'hate' here is relative, not absolute. What He is saying is that anyone who wants to be His disciple must love Him (as God incarnate) so much and so strongly that by comparison their love for self, family and friends will seem like hatred. In other words, a human creature's first obligation and loyalty is to His Creator rather than to himself or another creature (Ex.20:3; Matt.22:36-37).

You'll find once you spend some time here, that if you want to discuss scripture, you are better off in the Christian only sections.

Quoting scripture to non-believers is pretty darn pointless. I couldn't care less what the Bible says about anything unless you can provide corroborating evidence to support its claims.

Perhaps if you add a question to your post it would get somewhere.

The question is in the header: are we to love, or are we to hate? Not that difficult, is it?

No, that is not what the text says. It doesn't say 'if you love your father and mother more than me', it says 'if you don't hate your father and mother.'

You are trying to add things to the scriptures.

Ah . . . I understand. But do you understand the context of the Scripture, the culture to which this statement was made, and the timeframe? Simononline actually got it absolutely correct! At that time, in that culture, in that context, the audience Jesus spoke to would understand that "hate" here meant comparitivley in relation to ones' love of God.

Yes, we are to love. We are to love, though, with His love, which is greater than our own. We are to put all else aside in our love for Him . . . to the point where it looks like we hate all else. You see, it's a metaphor.

Dear nommo. We know hat Jesus told us, "love each other, by this all men will know, that you are mine." When Jesus tells us, unless we hate father or mother we cannot be His disciples. Jesus was pointing out, unless He is FIRST, unless He is the One we live for and if necessary die for, unless there is no one besides Him, we are not capable to be His alone. There were men and women who did exactly that, they gave their lives, their wealth and their time, for Jesus Christ. We love the Lord too, but we still belong to our families and our loved ones. That is how God made us, living with each other, and treating each other with love and considerration. I say this humbly and with love, nommo, and send greetings. P.S. which words should our Lord have used? unless love your parents less, or unless you ignore them? No, true discipleship costs heart, soul and all. Emmy, sister in Christ.

I fing quoting scriptures to believers pretty darn pointless. Don't know why that is though.
I don't know why that is, either. You'll get much more information from the learned than from those who have not studied Scripture, or those who believe Scripture is irrelevant. You don't go to a Kindergarten class to learn about physics, why should you go to unbelievers with a question on Scripture?
