  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1 COR 13
v4a) Love is patient, love is kind. v4b) it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

v5) It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs.

v6) Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

v7) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Verse 4a What love is like.....
Patience and kindness shows God's attitude to us
(2 Peter 3;9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is PATIENCE with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but every one to come to repentance.)
Jesus showed great patience with his disciples when they were slow to understand what he taught. And we also should show patience and kindness towards each other, after all does not the fruit of the Spirit include patience and kindness.
( Galatians 5;22...But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace PATIENCE, KINDNESS, goodness, faithfulness.)

Verses 4b-verse 7 what people with love do not do.

1- They do not feel jealous.
In corinth, people were jealous of each other's spiritual gifts. There were also groups who were competing with each other. they said that their leader was superior to the leader of other people. We need to remember that we are all given differant spiritual gifts to further God's work here on earth, and we should not be jealous of other's gifts. Also all leaders appointed by God, are all God's servants and we should never think that one is more superior to the other.

2- They do not boast.
there was a Pharisee in the story in Luke 18;9-12. He told God what a good person he was. Some of the Christians in corinth were boasting that they had wisdom and knowledge. It is not possible to boast and love at the same time. To boast is to make people notice you. To love is to think about other people.

3- They are not proud.
a proud person thinks too much about his own importance. A Christian who shows love is humble. William Carey was a shoe-maker who went to india about 200 years ago. He translated parts of the bible into many different languages. But he did not think he was more than someone who mended shoes.

4- They are not rude.
To behave well means more than to be polite. some Christians at Corinth were not respecting other people. Some were greedy and were not thinking about other's. They were without shame. To love means to think about other's feelings.

5-They are not self-seeking.
Christians should not use their freedom to act only for their own benifit.
(1 Corinthian 10;24...Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of other's.) and Philippians 2;4...Each of you should look not only to your own intrests, but also to the intrest of others.)

6- They do not easily become angry.
Paul began his description of love with the word patient. one kind of patience is to be able to keep calm when other's are angry. love does not answer insults with anger.

7-They keep no records of wrongs.
God does not keep a record of our sins once we have asked for forgivness.
(2 Corinthians 5;19...God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he commited to us the message of reconciliation.)
So the person who loves does not keep remembering an action or insult against him. Some people say "I will forgive but I will not forget." This statment means the person has not really forgiven his enemy.

8- They take no pleasure in evil.
They are happy with the truth. It is a sad fact that some people like to hear about failures of other's. newspapers, television often encourage an intrest in other peoples sins. A loving Christian does not try to find fault in other's. Love covers over a great number of sins.
( 1 Peter 4;8...Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.)
Gossip can ruin a person's life. But a loving person is happy when anyone succeeds.

9- Paul ends ends verse 7 by emphasising that love always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres.
People with love do not talk about other peoples faults. They do not give into insults and difficulities. Christians can trust God's promise to give them hope and a future.
(Jeremiah 29;11...For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.)

Thanks Paul,

May the Godly love described in these beautiful scriptures be our instruction in how to walk in His love toward others. What a powerful witness that is!

God has moved me to examine His love over the past few months, and I think one of the strongest messages I've received is from verses 4 and 5 of this important passage. I love them in the Amplified, and have written these on my heart AND on my 'frige, for strength in some trials I am experiencing. Oh, man, what power there is in His Word.
4 Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.

5 It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God's love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].

I will be patient, kind, and humble. I will NOT be rude, nor insist on my own way. I will not be touchy, fretful or resentful. I will pay NO attention to evil done to me.
I WILL, I WILL, I WILL. and I know this is possible because of His almighty grace and power, for it is He in me, and not me, that can accomplish God's love.

Thanks again for posting these!!

Yea Paul , real love can't be beat !

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
<-----> 1st John 3:14-19

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
<-----> Ephesians 4:14-16

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
<-----> Romans 13:8-10

Thankyou Lord for showing and teaching us True Love !

Paul, the people of Corinth did not often do things in love.

2000years later I believe it is just as important to show to people the love of Christ. Everything we do must be compared to that beautiful scripture to show that what we did was out of love.

We are ambassadors for Christ, and God is love - whatever we do we must do it in love and show others the love of Christ so that they may see God working in us and through us.

God Bless, metal.
