I couldn't help myself with ripping off the title for a spin off of the I love Valentine's thread.
Edited to add: If you don't get how the title is a spin off I was referring to splenda.
Because I think that the idea behind the holiday (love) is good and natural but I think what the holiday is, is a bunch of over-commercialized and pre-packaged junk...like splenda.
We now return to the OP:
The reason? I can't stand how over-commercialized society has made a day that is supposed to be about love. Then again, it came about in an era where courtly love and all that pomp were in fashion. I blame both the pope and Chaucer.
All the ads that play during this time of year, setting up people for more unrealistic expectations than Disney ever could. At least we knew that we weren't going to grow up to be a cartoon character...
The ads give people a sense of false hope that maybe this year it will be different. Maybe this year it won't suck.

I'm sorry, but this (the ad above), doesn't happen!
There are many more people who are going to end up disappointed by Valentine's day than people who are going to fall asleep happy.
I have a whole list of horrible Valentine's days and the worst ones I've had weren't when I was single...no it was in relationships.
1) Forgot it was Valentine's and handed me a $20 to go pick up pizza by myself in a snowstorm...at least he bought dinner?
2)Ignored me and a homemade meal with dessert for world of warcraft.
3) Flowers? A box of chocolates? No...I'll pass by all the other fundraisers at school and give you a giant chocolate phallus from the GSA...because you just seem like the kind of girl who would find that funny.
It's all so fake!
And you know what? I blame this stupid holiday for setting up unrealistic expectations. Every year I used to think that maybe it just wouldn't be horrible.
As of 2 years ago I quit having expectations that anything romantic happens on Valentine's Day.
What do you dislike about V-day?
