The way I understood that is they constructed their own reality so they could all find each other and meet up. They weren't able to die - which explains why Desmond wasn't at all fussed about running down Locke with the car.
But they could bleed because it was a reality of their own making - if they thought they could bleed then they would. Also explains how Jack kept having that bloody spot on his neck without any cause - it was a part of his mind and memory manifesting in the self-constructed reality.
Something about their psyche's reaching out toward one another even though they couldn't consciously remember one another until they'd undergone a period of self-realization.
Or something like that.
