  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, where have songs like Church in the Wildwood gone?

There's a church in the valley by the wildwood,
No lovelier spot in the dale;
No place is so dear to my childhood,
As the little brown church in the vale.

Chorus
(oh, come, come, come, come)
Come to the church in the wildwood,
Oh come to the church in the vale,
No spot is so dear to my childhood,
As the little brown church in the vale.

How sweet on a clear Sabbath morning,
To list'n to the clear ringing bells;
It's tones are so sweetly calling,
Oh come to the church in the vale.

Chorus
(oh, come, come, come, come)
Come to the church in the wildwood,
Oh come to the church in the vale,
No spot is so dear to my childhood,
As the little brown church in the vale.

There, close by the church in the valley,
Lies one that I loved so well;
She sleeps, sweetly sleeps, 'neath the willow,
Disturb not her rest in the vale.

Chorus
(oh, come, come, come, come)
Come to the church in the wildwood,
Oh come to the church in the vale,
No spot is so dear to my childhood,
As the little brown church in the vale.

There, close by the side of that loved one,
'Neath the tree where the wild flowers bloom,
When farewell hymns shall be chanted,
I shall rest by her side in the tomb.

Chorus
(oh, come, come, come, come)
Come to the church in the wildwood,
Oh come to the church in the vale,
No spot is so dear to my childhood,
As the little brown church in the vale.

How true. Here is one that is in many hymanals, yet is rarely sung anymore:

Let The Lower Lights Be Burning

Brightly beams our Father’s mercy from His lighthouse evermore,
But to us He gives the keeping of the lights along the shore.
Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave!
For to us He gives the keeping of the lights along the shore.

Dark the night of sin has settled, loud the angry billows roar;
Eager eyes are watching, longing, for the lights, along the shore.
Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave!
Eager eyes are watching, longing, for the lights, along the shore.

Trim your feeble lamp, my brother, some poor sailor tempest tossed,
Trying now to make the harbor, in the darkness may be lost.
Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave!
Trying now to make the harbor, some poor sailor may be lost.

I used to sing this one as a boy in Church. The refrain is high and sweet sounding.

The great Physician now is near,
The sympathizing Jesus;
He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,
Oh! hear the voice of Jesus.

Refrain

Sweetest note in seraph song,
Sweetest Name on mortal tongue;
Sweetest carol ever sung,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus.

Your many sins are all forgiv’n,
Oh! hear the voice of Jesus;
Go on your way in peace to Heav’n,
And wear a crown with Jesus.

Refrain

All glory to the dying Lamb!
I now believe in Jesus;
I love the blessèd Savior’s Name,
I love the Name of Jesus.

Refrain

The children, too, both great and small,
Who love the Name of Jesus,
May now accept the gracious call
To work and live for Jesus.

Refrain

Come, brethren, help me sing His praise,
Oh, praise the Name of Jesus;
Oh, sisters, all your voices raise,
Oh, bless the Name of Jesus.

Refrain

His Name dispels my guilt and fear,
No other name but Jesus;
Oh! how my soul delights to hear
The charming Name of Jesus.

Refrain

And when to that bright world above,
We rise to see our Jesus,
We’ll sing around the throne of love
His Name, the Name of Jesus.

Ahh! How lucky are you?

Here's another I loved but don't hear anymore:

Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to thee;
Take my moments, and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands, and let them move
At the impluse of thy love;
Take my feet, and let them be
Swift and beautiful for thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only for my King;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from thee.

Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it thine,
It shall be no longer mine;
Take my heart, it is thine own,
It shall be thy royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour
At thy feet it's treasure-store;
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for thee.

What a beautiful prayer of consecration to sing.
We sing this one in my church, sometimes.

Do you remember 'Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling'? It was my favourite when I was in the Salvation Army.. many years ago.
Someone sang this song to me a few years ago and it turned me into a blubbering mess for quite a while...

Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is Calling

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling for you and for me!
Patiently Jsus is waiting and watching,
Watching for you and for me!

Come home, come home!
Ye who are weary, come home!
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not his mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?

O for the wonderful love he has promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me!
We sing this one in my church, too.

I think that with the church growth movement, so many churches give up tradition and just go all out for contemporary rather than mixing them. Sadly, at times, it is what seems to work.

If the world from you withhold of its silver and its gold,
And you have to get along with meager fare,
Just remember, in His Word, how He feeds the little bird;
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

Refrain

Leave it there, leave it there,
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.
If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out.
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

If your body suffers pain and your health you can’t regain,
And your soul is almost sinking in despair,
Jesus knows the pain you feel, He can save and He can heal;
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

Refrain

When your enemies assail and your heart begins to fail,
Don’t forget that God in heaven answers prayer;
He will make a way for you and will lead you safely through.
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

Refrain

When your youthful days are gone and old age is stealing on,
And your body bends beneath the weight of care;
He will never leave you then, He’ll go with you to the end.
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

The Old Account Was Settled Long Ago

Chorus
Long ago (down on my knees)
Long ago (I setted it all)
Yes, the old account was settled long ago; (Hallelujah!)
And the record's clear today,
For He washed my sins away,
When the old account was settled long ago.

There was a time on earth,
When in the book of Heav'n
An old account was standing
For sins yet unforgiv'n;
My name was at the top,
And many things below,
I went unto the keeper,
And settled long ago.

Chorus
Long ago (down on my knees)
Long ago (I setted it all)
Yes, the old account was settled long ago; (Hallelujah!)
And the record's clear today,
For He washed my sins away,
When the old account was settled long ago.

The old account was large,
And growing ev'ry day,
For I was always sinning,
And never tried to pay;
But When I looked ahead,
And saw such pain and woe,
I said that I would settle,
I settled long ago.

Chorus
Long ago (down on my knees)
Long ago (I setted it all)
Yes, the old account was settled long ago; (Hallelujah!)
And the record's clear today,
For He washed my sins away,
When the old account was settled long ago.

When in that happy home,
My Saviour's home above,
I'll sing redemption's story,
And praise Him for His love;
I'll not forget that book,
With pages white as snow,
Because I came and settled,
And settled long ago.

Chorus
Long ago (down on my knees)
Long ago (I setted it all)
Yes, the old account was settled long ago; (Hallelujah!)
And the record's clear today,
For He washed my sins away,
When the old account was settled long ago.

When We All Get to Heaven

Eliza E. Hewitt, pub.1898

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus,
Sing His mercy and His grace;
In the mansions bright and blessed
He’ll prepare for us a place.

Chorus:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

While we walk the pilgrim pathway,
Clouds will overspread the sky;
But when trav’ling days are over,
Not a shadow, not a sigh.

Chorus:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

Let us then be true and faithful,
Trusting, serving every day;
Just one glimpse of Him in glory
Will the toils of life repay.

Chorus:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

Onward to the prize before us!
Soon His beauty we’ll behold;
Soon the pearly gates will open;
We shall tread the streets of gold.

Chorus:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!

Is this song posted in the right thread?? Or does it belong in the favorite hymn thread?? The reason I am asking is that we sing this one all the time!! And I do mean all the time! :clap: :clap:

Yeah this was the thread I intended to post it on .... :sorry:

Oh no!! Don't delete it!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wondering. It's sad that some churches don't sing this song at all anymore. I attended a funeral yesterday (held in our church) and this was sung there. Just wondering about others--does your church still sing this one?

By the way-keep those old hymns coming.

Oops I did delete it. Ya know why I thought it was old? Coz my grandpa liked it and he was born in 1897 and before he died we sang it non stop and now I never hear it but that could be ...because Grandpa isn't here to request it.

I love the old hymns. I have an organ sitting here in my living room and so guess what I do when I am not on a computer. I am playing all old ones because that is what I was raised on. Now I keep the new song books so when my daughter comes she can play the new ones but I play the old ones.

I use all the old songs when I go to the nursing homes because our seasoned saints don't like the new songs and I want them to be encouraged and I want them to hear the message in those songs that will encourage their hearts. We get a few that won't come to chapel but the will stay outside in the hall and listen to the music and then you will hear them later in the day singing it to the top of their lungs and so the hymns are so needed and I pray there will be a balance of old and new so that when I am old and if I end up in a nursing home someone will help me get that song in my heart that I was raised on.

Good post on old hymn's...

:) :wave: :thumbsup:

It's been many a year since I heard this one in church. It is not in most newer hymnals.

Shall We Gather At The River

Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

(chorus)
Yes, we’ll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will talk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.

Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

At the smiling of the river,
Mirror of the Savior’s face,
Saints, whom death will never sever,
Lift their songs of saving grace.

Soon we’ll reach the silver river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.

This one could also be put in the missing verses, because almost every hymnal has only 4 verses, not printing the 4th verse above. Also, in many hymnals, vs2 says "On the bosum of the river." I think "margin" is the original, but I am not sure.

Okay Rich, that one is in my hymnal...so it looks like that it depends on the hymnal but here is a song that I have not heard years in church and if anyone is still singing it in their church I would love to hear from you just because the song is so beautiful it would be horrible to lose it.

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

attr. to Dorothy A. Thrupp, 1836

  1. Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care;
    In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Thy folds prepare.
    Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
    Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
  2. We are Thine, Thou dost befriend us, be the Guardian of our way;
    Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray.
    Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray.
    Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray.
  3. Thou hast promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be;
    Thou hast mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse and pow’r to free.
    Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! We will early turn to Thee.
    Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! We will early turn to Thee.
  4. Early let us seek Thy favor, early let us do Thy will;
    Blessed Lord and only Savior, with Thy love our bosoms fill.
    Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast loved us, love us still.

Here's another one that I have not heard in years.

Did You Think To Pray

Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Savior,
Did you sue for loving favor,
As a shield today?

(chorus)
O how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.

When you met with great temptation,
Did you think to pray?
By His dying love and merit,
Did you claim the Holy Spirit
As your guide and stay?

When your heart was filled with anger,
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way?

When sore trials came upon you,
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was bowed in sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates of day?
