I've heard such wonderful responses thus far on topics I'm still struggling with. Can anyone post verses that prove real presence in the elements and explain why its not just a memorial? Did the early church fathers believe in it? Feel free to give me the low down  I'm used to the belief that its only a memorial and nothing more.

I have more great questions that will get our brain juices flowing but I'll leave you with this for now.

The very words of institution in the 3 synoptic gospels. Jesus says in all of them. . . "This is my body" and "This is my blood" Why should we not take Jesus at his word when he says this? Because it sounds weird? Being born of a virgin sounds kinda weird too. Because we arn't sure how he does this?? Well I'm not sure how God rose from the dead either, but I know he did.

In terms of the church fathers, I have never heard of one single church father that was not declared a heretic, that belived the Lord's Supper to only be a memorial or a symbol. If you can find one be my guest. . . But they uniformly all belived that Christ was really and truely present in the bread and wine.

This link is to a series by Pastor Weedon about the historic liturgy which should cover just about everything you have questions.

Then, you can always go to Issues Etc. LINK and do a search on whatever term you have. They have papers as well as podcasts on tons of subjects regarding the church and practice.

As a former Evangelical, I actually grew up Pentecostal and was mentored by the Word of Faith founder Kenneth E. Hagin in Tulsa Oklahoma for at Rhema Bible Church and trained as a Word of Faith pastor at Rhema Bible Training Center for nearly 10 years but was thankfully delivered, I wanted to thank you guys here.

I have been "converted" to Calvinism, but the likes of Issues, Ect., Faith Capo, Chris Rosebrough, and Rod Rosenbladt podcast I am convinenced of many Lutheran distinctives.

The two big ones I am working out are the Lord's Supper and Baptism. I listened to Rod Rosenbladt go through Martin Chemnitz's "The two natures in Christ" and I am convinenced, but I need more grounding and more understanding to feel solid and to articulate it elsewhere.

I ask that you guys keep up the good work, and please those of you who grasp and understand these issues from the Lutheran perspective to continue to put forth the effort to make it available on places like this and articulate it well and provide resources.

Folks like me are searching, and you never know who will come across the information you have provided.

Thank you!
Glen.

So many new members in one thread!

On behalf of Christian Forums, Theologia Crucis, and CF's Staff; welcome!

For Glen and ratchet (and the rest of us too;)); The Small Catechism is a good place to begin one's journey in understandiing our doctrines, the Large Catechism gives a much deeper explanation of these doctrines and their application, here are a couple of links:

+ The Large Catechism

These are part of the Lutheran Confessions contained in the Book of Concord, the whole of which can be found here: Welcome to the Book of Concord

I think in addition to the words of institution passages, Matt. 26:26-28, Mark 14:22-24, Luke 22:19-20, and 1 Corinthians 11:23-29, the best passage is 1 Corinthians 10:16.

Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing (koinonia) in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing (koinonia) in the body of Christ?
