flash? ugh... yuk! that's the worst thing to hit the internet...

besides, then you are effectively excluding a large part of your intended audience... blind people who use screen readers can't "read" flash objects; people with dialup will curse you because flash takes *forever* to download; non-windows/mac users will curse you because macromedia is not that fond of non-proprietary operating systems (because they effectively get no money from them), and hence the support for non-windows/mac operating systems is dismal; people without the flash plugin (which is more than you think) are gonne wonder why your web site "doesn't work"

and then all the above-mentioned people will not come back to your site.

Flash is sweet and looks really good when done well. But I agree with superfly. There are just too many problems with flash to warrent using it. If you must have dynamic content, use php or java or something other than flash. If you'd like some help with php, I'm decently skilled in that area along with databases (mySQL). But as soon as school starts at the end of august, I'm not going to have the time to be working on a site very much. I'll have a ton of work on my hands trying to keep up with all my classes.

I rarely see Java applets or Flash images these days - at least on the sites I visit. I've certainly made both. Some websites really got carried away with Flash. I don't really know a functional alternative for Java if a person wants to get all those neat features. For instance, I recall the online trading station by Ameritrade is a really elaborate Java applet. I personally like Flash. I just don't know what sort of user interface to use that can get the same sort of animation effects.

Java applets can probably do most of the things flash does. Unless you write your own libraries for it, I doubt you can do all the animation stuff with it. Considering Flash's scripting language is modeled after Java.... :p
Java applets are moreso used as interfaces to enterprise apps, since they don't always need middleware like webapps do.

And no website can ever function with just 95% of users still able to visit their site! :p

The company I work for has a website with flash, we have a few thousand visitors a day. In the last four years I have received a grand total of 1 complaint about Flash.

But how many people actually bother to file a complaint? I have visited dozens of websites that I've had trouble with and I just go to a different one. I also hope your site can tell people how to report a problem without requiring flash, as it's quite hard to say you can't access a site if you are required to access it to find the email address :p

Sometimes it's just more practical to use a .swf image because the images take up much less memory. The quality is often better on Flash, too. I used to have trouble getting reasonably small (in terms of memory) JPEG images that have lots of colours. But the problem is solved if I paste it on a Flash frame and then use the .swf image instead. This is if you use a lot of gradients. Flash also has good export conversion algorithms.

I can't believe I'm actually hearing this...flash 'the worst thing to hit the internet' and 'you should refrain from using...javascript.' Wow.

Hey, I'm all for keeping coding done in PHP and using CSS instead of a flash template for your site, but Flash can do so much PHP and coding can't do in the way of animation.

Don't use Javascript? What's wrong with JS? When has properly done compliant JS ever impeded the look of a site.

I'm at a loss.
