Hey as the title suggests, I am looking for a denomination. I did some research on the Adventists, but I would rather learn from you guys, because I feel I would get a more accurate prospective.
My questions are as follows;
*How do you differ form typical protestant beliefs?
*Why are you a separate denomination?
*What did you split from?
*Is there diversity of beliefs within your own denomination?
*Are you reformed?
*Does your denomination foster legalism?
Thanks a lot,
Jake
Not in any particular order -
1. As has been stated - this is not a split from another denomination.
Distinctives in this denomination includes acceptance of God's Ten Commandments (1Cor 7:19 "But what matters is keeping the Commandments of God")
All of our doctrines are tested "sola scriptura"
Acceptance of the doctrine of soul "sleep" found in 1Thess 4 and John 11.
Acceptance of both NT and OT as valid scripture -- all 66 books.
Acceptance of 1Cor 12 spiritual gifts.
The most advanced and complete understanding of Daniel's prophecies of any denomination in existence today.
1260 years of Daniel 7 (And of Rev 11, and again Rev 12) referring to the 1260 years of the dark ages.
490 years of Dan 9 pointing to the time of the first coming of the Messiah - and not chopped up -- no gaps inserted into the timeline. Just direct continuous time counted off.
2300 years of Dan 8 being the larger time line within which the 490 years of Dan 9 are a part.
Advanced understanding of health principles.
Advanced establishment of world wide educational, medical and humanitarian aid organizations.
Advanced understanding of the entire gospel timeline starting with the war in heaven, the fall of the angels, the creation of earth, the fall of man, the preflood years, the tribulation, the 2nd coming, the millennium and the New Earth. This is especially true of final events just before the 2nd coming.
2. If by "reformed" you mean Calvinist - no this is not a Calvinist group - it is Arminian. We believe in the Bible doctrine of "whosoever will" may come to Christ for "God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" 2Peter 3. Not that all WILL choose salvation - but God is "Drawing all mankind unto him" John 12:32.
3. Nothing in Adventist doctrine requires or mandates legalism. In fact we believe that a person is "saved by grace through faith - not of works lest anyone should boast" Eph 2:8-10.
But we ALSO believe in "perseverance of the saints" as do 3 and 5 point Calvinists to some extent.
4. We have diversity on a number of subjects - but we also have a voted set of "Fundamental Beliefs" that the entire denomination votes on.
in Christ,
Bob
