  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How many of you are in one? What do you do to help it stay alive? Any ideas or suggestions would be great; I live 650 miles away from my man and it's very hard sometimes.

Creative ideas and suggestions to keep the fun and romance alive appreciated!

Talking on the phone (as opposed to email or something similar), it's always so nice to hear her voice, it's more personal. Snail mail letters can help too. Basically anything that will give a more tangible perspective to your relationship is going to make a big difference.

I have been in one the past almost 5 months now. It can be kinda hard not being close...and that goes extra for me since I want to marry her. But I find phone calls, emails, little messages here and there (every day) and snail mail really helps me. My gf has even called me from work at 5 in the morning my time hehe. It was soooooo good to wake up to her voice! Lots of time spent talking and leaving notes is a must I think. But I think like ALL relationships, it still goes into the old "work at it" thing. You have to work at a LDR like anything else. Only it is so much faster to work through problems cause all you can do is learn to comunicate! And the BEST thing I know of right now is to have a plan in place to be together for good one day. Not just a thought on "it would be good if we could" but I mean a REAL PLAN.

I have to admit, communication does help, and I send him care packages and we talk on the phone almost everyday... we talk on the phone, e-mail, IM, voice chat online, snail mail letters... but has anyone every done anything really, really extra special for their SOs? Sent them something, done anything for them like, extra special?

COMMUNICATION is the key in piloting any LDR. I am in one myself and although my telephone bill is high as ever!!! I am now learning discipline. That is something you MUST learn in a LDR.

We communicate via pm on forums we are both apart of, msn/some other messengers, phone cards, emails and the good old letters with postcards. He is in Jamaica and I am right here in the USA.

Sometimes it gets rough and you feel like calling it quits...but with PRAYER and supplication make your request known to God. Keep your self and mind occupied at your location with hobbies, friends (same gender preferable) and activities in church. This really helps to detour your mind from things.

But on the real, sometimes the rubber hits the road and you just miss him so much you cry or sneak a phone call...but hang in there all you LDR...we are brave people. COnsidering that relationships-love-all the mouchy stuff also entails being around the person a good while.

Shalom....the peculiarone :D

Here is some advice too...think of it like your relationship with God. How does He show you care? I hear lots of people talk about how they would never be in a LDR but has anyone ever stoped to think that every christian IS in one? I mean Jesus went to prepare a place for us. Thus long distance. I have found sooooo many simularities in my relationship with God! So I think the BEST thing to do is to do what God would do for us. He left little gifts, love letters, He calls us (speaks His word to us), and LEFT US WITH A PLAN AND A PROMISE TO COME FOR US! I think that is the GREATEST thing in a LDR. With no plan you begin to wonder if you will ever be together. But having a plan in place lets you know it WILL happen if you just hold on.

If you want extra nice things to do though, just keep up what your doing. Or how bout making a video greeting? Like get a friend to make a video of you at certain places you want to go with your SO. And tell the cammera why you want to be there with your SO. I think that would be cool. Plus a little blown kiss is good too hehe :p.

Awww! These ideas are fantastic! And looksgood, I NEVER thought about my LDR with David vs. my LDR with God! What a FANTASTIC way to think!

Okay, this should be the official long-distance relationship thread, LOL!

Every day I am amazed at what I learn about me and God through my and my gf! The other day I even had scripture come to my mind I never understood that I finaly got cause of her! God is so amazing to me and I am so thankfull for Him and for her! I think EVERYONE would do good to compare the relationships. It really helps love grow I think. Because if we love as God loves, how wonderfull a relationship we will have!!! And we should show that love as God does, with all His ways. I would like to give some more ideas that I have had about doing romantic things for her, and things she did for me. But I think some things just are too personal to speak of on an open forum ;).

LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS STINK...at times...but then you have to realize why you are doing it. for me it is because i love my boyfriend, and i am willing to wait as long as i have to to have him back in my town...but yeah, it sucks at times. i have been doing it for a little over a year now...and its crazy how much i can miss him...but i would suggest for any LD couple to get webcams...they are awesome...then i can see him still...it makes it good

I'm in one. Been in one for over 4 years. We see each other on some weekends, most holidays, etc. But overall, we're at least 2 hours apart.

Phone cards probably stay in business thanks to us. Also, the postal workers get a workout as we write letters. It's not the quanitity of communication (though more is almost always better), it's the quality.

Communication. That and lots of prayer. There's the keys, for me at least.

It's been almost 3 and a half months since Danie and I started our LDR. Although we do usually get to talk every day (either via IM or on the phone) I agree with Angelus that quality matters much more than quantity. It's especially so when the Pacific Ocean separates you both. I'm in an LDR because I genuinely believe that God has gifted me with my future wife, and even when times are tough and I can't be there in person to comfort Danie when she needs me, I know that patience will be a huge virtue. Danie knows that I love her with all my heart and that I have committed myself to her. Some might say that all we need is a ring to confirm it...:)

I dont know if anyone mentioned it before, but my LDR bf is doing the most adorable thing for me, taping a homevideo, with him, the surroundings and him goofing around, I just cant wait to see it:) I love him soo much, another thing that helps is talking and seeing eachother over a webcamera at the same time, its so great to see the reaction instead of just hearing it!!:D

My bf is across the atlantic from me so any feeling of having him closer is so welcomed although it has resulted in me sleeping a couple of hours in the afternoon so that i can speak to him when he has the ability to talk to me (after midnight here).....

I wish you all the best, and I believe that as long as you both are willing to fight for the relationship and maybe put in that extra effort you will make it;)

Blessings to you and your bf

Considering just about everyone who has posted in this thread is in one, I think you're a little late ;)
Na na na na na. (what time is it anyway? I'm tired and have to go to work soon. I think I forgot to go to bed.)

Anyway, I think my advise is the best advise here. It saves money and heartache. A two for one deal!

I can always count on you sweety for awesome advice
See? Candice agrees with me.:) .......or not. As a history major, I've learned that the past often repeats itself in one form or another. I'm just saying...

How are you?
Scrumptious, but still a little raw for some people's taste.;)

How's Ontario?
Beats me, I'm in Northwestern Ontario.:) It's about 9 degrees and thunderstorming here. I blame western Canada.

Or have you picked up and moved again?
Not until next summer at least. Hello Winnipeg! For at least a month!

Just make sure you stop off in BC to see me mmmk?
You'll be coming this way before I'm coming that way. Besides, I'm on your way home. Take the train and stop off and see me for a few days. Free room and board, no strings attacted!:)

Ciao for now!

And women in canoes.

Winnipeg eh? Why Winnipeg?
Because it's the closest city to me! I want to take a course, and I can stay in Winnipeg for free. So it's close and free.

Your parents won't help you come home for Christmas? Maybe you should be working at a paying job over the holidays instead of volenteering. You are a poor student after all!

If you ever come to Northern Ontario(if I'm even here!), I hope you like plaid, showshoes and ice fishing. Ummm.....I have a sauna.:)
