Has anyone ever tried unlocking their car from a distance using their cell phone? "Supposidly" if you lock your keys in your car and you call someone who has another remote sensor that opens your door, they can hold it up to the phone and you can hold your phone close to the door and when they push the button, it will unlock the door.

I don't know if this is true or not. A co-worker reminde me of this AFTER I had already driven out to unlock a vehicle company when staff accidently locked the keys in the car. If I had thought of this before, I would have tried it!

Are you thinking of OnStar Service?

It doesn't make sense that one person's (yours or someone else's) electronic key can open any other car door with an electronic lock, which is basically what the rumour is implying.

I don't see why it wouldn't work if the key device transmits a tone of sorts. Sound is sound. However, there would be so much signal loss over the phone. The phone would have to be really close.
