Do have problems with pairing referents with the things they refer to.dollarsbill said:Comparing Jesus' words to "fiction" "any shared story"?
Nothing in my post compared Jesus' words to fiction.
Though quite a good proportion of Jesus words are story in Luke, where he is the master at making up stories that teach essential truths.
The point here is that, whoever is saying it, "as it happened in... " can perfectly well refer to a piece of fiction, a myth, a parable, historical narrative, or pretty much any kind of story. It is not a statement that the story actually happened in history, but that what is about to be said is like what happened in the story referred to.
No doubt if TV had been around when Jesus was teaching he might well have alluded to well known characters and storylines to get his message across
