Howdy! I am curious to know which one do you prefer. I honestly prefer liturgy since it feels more traditional and worship-based (plus Communion). What do you think?

When I was young my family attended a Baptist church. I went there hundreds of times. As l got older I rarely ever went at all.

When I decided to return, I visited a number of different protestant churches that never seemed to "do it" for me. It was only with my first visit to an Orthodox Church that I saw people actually worshipping God. And it is there that people eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man.

I can never return to a protestant church again. No sermons for me.

Are there not sermons in Catholic and EO churches? What's wrong with a sermon?

There are sermons but that really isn't what the service is about. The liturgy has existed since the beginning, and it's purpose is to allow us to worship God, in the prescribed manner. Central to the liturgy is the Eucharist, where Christ is truly present with us.

They do have homilies, but typically they are about ten minutes long or so. My Lutheran church has sermons that are only slightly longer.

Personally, I prefer short sermons, esp. if the pastor or priest has very limited life experiences. If I want a detailed Bible lesson I will go to Bible study.

I think it's a sad and fatal mistake to separate the word from the sacrament or to exult one above the other. Why separate what God has joined together?

What word are we separating?

Our "sermons" (the actual teachings) are typically no less than 40 to 45 minutes, sometimes closer to (or occasionally, beyond) an hour... and I am usually left wishing they would continue. But, we all have time constraints, and most preachers try to honor that.

Most messianic congregations have both liturgy (based on Jewish liturgy) and a good teaching or evangelical sermon.

You are separating the preached word from the sacrament.

They have both in the Orthodox Church. That they don't focus as much as some Protestants do on the sermon doesn't exclude the Word. In fact it's treated with a great deal of reverence, the Gospel has its own entrance where it is literally lifted up, and it is always sung or chanted.

Thank you. You just told my story. Those who oppose liturgical service do not understand the concept of worship. I never saw worship at a Baptist Church. A bit of praise but never any worship. I came to understand the did not know what worship was. They thought it was singing a few hymns that mainly focused on man rather than God.

I also found most of the services at Baptist/Methodist type churches to be just a boring waste of time, IMHO. It has been in mainly "non-denominational" type gatherings that I sensed God was there.

So how do you worship cooperatively? Mean all as one. How is this possible without it being taught? I do understand that many can worship at once in differing manners but that is not being one. That is many doing it at the same time. Or am I reading them wrong?
I thought Methodist were liturgical . I could be wrong.
