My church observed Advent yesterday, and it made me curious about Advent in other Baptist churches.

Does your church do Advent?

Would you say that Advent and other days of the Liturgical Calendar are becoming more frequent in Baptist churches?

Are there any holy days you or your church observe other than Christmas and Easter?

I visit a Baptist church from time to time, and there aren't any Advent services. The last I had attended on was a few years ago, in a Catholic church. Does your church worship around the Advent wreath, etc?

It wasn't anything too fancy. The pastor lit a candle and the congregation partook in Communion, but that was pretty much it.

Although people call it christmas and easter and pagans celebrate it in church obviously these secular holidays where people have the day off are reminders of Jesus.

But its not like in the catholic church where you are obligated to attend church I heard and sort of condemened if you dont. For example in baptist church we dont have a 'midnight mass' on christmas eve where everyone must attend, or stations of the cross on easter or things like that.

On holidays many people spend it with families so go back to their homes and if they are attending church you will get all the relatives visiting so church will have lots of visitors and many that would normally be there arent cos theyve gone to their parents or in laws church for the day.

In nz ANZAC day.

On this day, april 25 everyone gets at least half a day off to attended dawn services at the RSA. Sometimes churches will mention it in the sunday near to it but usually the services at the RSA and war memorials will have prayers and church choirs singing.

It is to rememeber those who gave their lives in the world wars that they not be forgotten. Traditionally anzac biscuits are eaten and we wear poppies.

Be interesting to see this question answered in the ADVENTIST forum. They must celebrate it all the time.

Baptists who follow scripture do not have any 'holy days.'

1) The observance of Lent, Advent and Christmas is not commanded in scripture (easy enough) and therefore finds its origin somwhere else. It's antichristian in origin, meaning in place of Christian freedom and religion, not in the eschatological sense. However, it is in accordance with prophecy, that warns about the raise of false religion that attempts to robe itself in Christian imagery, apostolic authority, the Bible, etc.

2) and, the practices accompanying the Roman Catholic observance of Lent, Advent and Christmas, promotes the antichristian religion of self-righteousness by pretending to give merit for pilgrimages, the increase of the adoration of images of Jesus/Christmas Trees/Infant Jesus/Stars and other such indulgences that are not commanded in scripture and often run completely contrary to scripture.

May God, the Lord and giving of Light, have mercy upon us all.

It is against truth and the Scriptures to observe a "holy" day. The fact that Baptists are doing it breaks my heart.

At my parents' Southern Baptist church they have a 'hanging of the greens' service. However, they don't do Advent, so it kind of baffles me. The only reason their church is even having a Christmas service is because it actually falls on Sunday this year- otherwise there would be no Christmas service.
