I am the boy who never finished high school, because I got called cruel demeaning names everyday.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the girl kicked out of her home because I confided in my mother that I am a lesbian.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the prostitute working the streets because nobody will hire a transsexual woman.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the sister who holds her gay brother tight through the painful, tear-filled nights.

Christ, have mercy.

We are the parents who buried our daughter long before her time.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the man who died alone in the hospital because they would not let my partner of twenty-seven years into the room.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the foster child who wakes up with nightmares of being taken away from the two fathers who are the only loving family I have ever had. I wish they could adopt me.

Lord, have mercy.

I am not one of the lucky ones. I killed myself just weeks before graduating high school. It was simply too much to bear.

Christ, have mercy.

We are the couple who had the realtor hang up on us when she found out we wanted to rent a one-bedroom for two men.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the person who never knows which bathroom I should use if I want to avoid getting the management called on me.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the mother who is not allowed to even visit the children I bore, nursed, and raised. The court says I am an unfit mother because I now live with another woman.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the domestic-violence survivor who found the support system grow suddenly cold and distant when they found out my abusive partner is also a woman.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the domestic-violence survivor who has no support system to turn to because I am male.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the father who has never hugged his son because I grew up afraid to show affection to other men.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the home-economics teacher who always wanted to teach gym until someone told me that only lesbians do that.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the woman who died when the EMTs stopped treating me as soon as they realized I was transsexual. (yes, this actually happened)

Christ, have mercy.

I am the person who feels guilty because I think I could be a much better person if I didnt have to always deal with society hating me.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the boy tied to a fence, beaten to a bloody pulp and left to die because two straight men wanted to "teach me a lesson."

Christ, have mercy.

I am the woman who was raped to "make me straight again."

Lord, have mercy.

I am the man who stopped attending church, not because I don't believe, but because they closed their doors to my kind.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the person who was sent to a reparative therapy facility which taught me to hate myself for who I am, and my desires for what they are, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to find love.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the person who was told I could not be a Christian because I am attracted to people of my own sex.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the person who was excommunicated (and shunned) from my church when I confided my same-sex interests to the pastor, who promptly told the church council and the bishop.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the person who was fired from a job when my employer found out I had a same-sex partner -- which is perfectly legal in my state because there are no laws protecting GLBTs from being fired solely because of their sexual orientation.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the person who was told he/she is a "Godless, atheistic, homosexual fornicator who is doomed and damned and destined to burn forever in Hell" because I have a same-sex partner of 17 years.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the person who lost his faith because too many people who claimed to be "loving the sinner and hating the sin" used the Bible as a weapon to "convict" me of my sexual orientation, while they used the same Bible to let themselves off the hook for their sins of pride, insolence, haughtiness, arrogance, conceit, condemnation, narcissism, egotism, self-righteousness, cruelty and smugness -- I'll be damned if I ever set foot in a church again.

Christ, have mercy.

I am the person who is 80 years old and never truly loved anybody, never had a relationship, hated myself for who I am and whom I'm attracted to -- and am now lonely and isolated and waiting for my life to be over.

Lord, have mercy.

I am the person who looked at the behavior of Your followers, decided I'd be better off burning in Hell than acting like them if that's what Christianity is all about -- and have rejected Christianity, in toto.

Christ, have mercy.

Great post, uber. You reveal how gay people are too often treated, and what effects that treatment has on us.

Note: I have already reported my post to the mods for you, so you don't have to report it. :(

You gave some horrific examples of people not loving their neighbors as themselves. But do we know how many of these were Christians?

That aside, being ill-treated doesn't make sin any less sin.

Most of the people doing these things to gays and lesbians claimed to be Christians.

Whether they are or are not Christian is between themselves and God.

It doesn't mean the damage these people do is any less horrific.

And if some of you wonder why I seem rather bitter at times -- well, I've given you all 28 examples.

The Bible says in Galatians 5:22

Where is your joy man? It's natural to get perturbed sometimes, but you always seem like there is no joy in your life.

Excellent thread, Uber....very thought provoking. Also showing the bigotry and how haunting it can get so close to home.

Truly?

In all my studies in Scripture, I have never once...never seen an instance where our Savior kicked a person for who he or she was...never once saw our Savior respond to a person's shortcomings with anything other than compassion. Even in His rebukes He responded with kindness, empathy, and compassion. The one exception were the Pharisees...who were so busy pointing out the shortcomings of others, that they were blinded to their own sins.

I don't have to agree with the gay and lesbian lifestyle, but that doesn't stop me from showing those who live it compassion, understanding, from sharing in their pain and torment...that is what love does...it responds with kindness and compassion.

It is well known that I personally feel Scripture calls it a sin...but it is also well known that it is NOT my place to condemn, nor is it my place to use Scripture as a blunt instrument to further debase those who feel it isn't a sin.

Their faith, their lifestyle choices, whether they are allowed to marry, adopt children...I leave that judgement where it belongs...in the hands of our Savior.

In the meantime, posts like the OP just reinforce the cruelty that these people suffer as teens and into adulthood. What a quandary it must be to have these feelings, and yet be brave enough to endure the abuse and degradation that is handed to them daily ... in real life and online.

I truly hope and pray that when I stand before my Savior I'm not answering for hurting the "least of these" and instead hearing "well done thou good and faithful servant" for sharing HIS love and HIS compassion with those who receive little else from others in this world...

So yes, I'm proud of that post above...

you may add me to the pyre now ;)

For my friend UL--from the Lutheran Book of Worship:

We confess that we are in bondage to sin, and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your son, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

If one who says they are in Christ, succeeds in being loved by
militant sinners, where Jesus and the Apostles all failed to the point
they were barbarically murdered then it is probably a good idea to
check the Theology one is following and on whose side one actually stands.

For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I
yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10

Jesus said,"He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathers
not with me scatters abroad.
Matthew 12:30

"He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathers not with me scatters."
Luke 11:23

The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
It is
enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord.
If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall
they call them of his household?
Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered,
that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear,
that preach ye upon the housetops.
And fear not them which kill the body,
but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy
both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:24-28

Ezekiel 33:6-9
But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t sound the alarm to warn the people, he is responsible for their captivity. They will die in their sins, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their deaths.’ “Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me. If I announce that some wicked people are sure to die and you fail to tell them to change their ways, then they will die in their sins, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. But if you warn them to repent and they don’t repent, they will die in their sins, but you will have saved yourself.

the things of God, neither can he know them as they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

The mind of the natural man does not comprehend
the things of God, neither can he know them as they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14
And what exactly do those scriptures have to do with showing love and compassion to your neighbor?

what do they say about breaking the command to love them as yourself.

what do those scripture say about those who promote judgement rather than forgiveness, the law rather than grace, tribulation instead of peace?

absolutely NOTHING.
