Got a red hat server. Runs like a dream! Was a bit of a pain to set up, due to cheapass hardware (in computing if you have the time and energy to put in then you can do it cheap, if you would rather have it quick and easy, get ready to pay ;-) but surely the time and effort is half the fun!?!) but most mainstream hardware is supported. and (almost) anything can be set up, the lag behind seems to be USB equipment. If support isn't built in and manufacturers don't provide drivers then it wont work, but with pci stuff a generic driver or occasionally third party drivers will help u get it u and running.

Ultimately for a pain free linux experience, buy hardware that is known to be supported and provides support for linux set ups (eg nVidia)

Once you have it running you will be amazed at the cleanness you are presented with at the top level even after some time of runnig, while a slightly deeper search will find a multitude of customizable tasks and services all humming away in perfect harmony... :: sighs :: :help:

Yet I still use Windows XP for my desktop and laptop. :)

As soon as I get cable, I'd like to try fedora... After downloading PHLAK (another linux-based OS), for about 3 nights, I'd thought I would wait until then.

My problem is trying to get linux-compatible software to replace the software I already have. I'm finding it difficult to switch over.

I've used Red Hat and Mandrake.

My opinion on Linux vs. Microsoft:
If you are looking for a powerful media house that can do nearly anything and everything from gaming to video editing, etc... go with Microsoft. If you are looking for an OS that takes little space and few resources to run, is efficient and inexpensive... go with Linux.

Another note... if you plan on using much software, or have the newest hardware, go with MS. I've had trouble locating drivers on occasion for Linux, not to mention your software selection is nearly non-existant.

But if you don't care about this... say for example you only need a file server... bingo... Linux. Otherwise, stick with MS.

Yes, handfuls of software on linux...

compared to the truckloads of software on MS.

Have you been under a rock or something?
Yes, many people do refer to the planet Earth as a giant rock... which planet are you from?

But still... you're wrong and I'm right ;)

jk.

Hey, you're the one that wanted to argue about it. But in all honesty, even for free software, MS owns the juice. There's more freeware for the MS OS than Linux could even put a dent into.

I’m assuming you mean zero-priced software (which is different from free software; see here). I haven’t found much of it. I once looked for a text editor to replace Notepad. I found Cooledit, Ultraedit, Xedit, the whole lot—for a price. Finally I found VIM, which is zero-priced (and free) because it’s been ported from the GNU/Linux world.
