What can I say? I'm a Linux fanboy and a Windows basher.

In short, Linux is basically the same as Windows, except you get almost no errors, it's free, and can run on anything (even Xbox, Gamecube, iPod, Nintendo DS etc)

Anyone else like Linux? And if so, what do you use it for and what distro do you use?

I have Windows XP D/B Ubuntu Linux. I use Linux for developing and mucking around.

I really like Linux and I have used the distros Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Suse, Fedora, DSL, Mepis, Mandriva and Linspire. I have to say although linux is brilliant and can be used for work related tasks it is naff for gamers. I spend most of my time playing games on my computer and because Linux does not support direct X it is almost usless for my desired tasks.

I've got Ubuntu dualbooted with WinXP Basic. If I could put in a USB 2.0 card, then I would probably use Ubuntu more (because I would be able to use my external harddrive more, so I could partition a larger space to work under). I'm really wanting to try out Cinelerra, but I don't have enough space right now, and there's no freaking way I'm making a FAT32 partition on my computer.

I have in the past used, Red Hat 7.2 (custom), Damn Small Linux (for school work when windows stuffed it self over because of some immature student) and currently I run two computers at home, this one is running XP Pro because of the programming languages and tools I tend to program in (VB, actionscript, dreamwweaver.. etc), also I am on holidays and most computer games run on windows unfortunatly. The other computer runs Mepis 3.3 (installed from live cd distro). I also have run a non gui interfaced version of Dragon Linux.. not sure of the distro vr for that one though.

Dual booting linux and windows has been hazardous to the computer components for some reason.. so I am not going to ever attempt that again but the two current computers network rather well, unfortunatly atm I can not work out how to file share.. Eitherway it will be fine to use CDRWs and floppy discs for that.:)

I have a purely functional perspective on operating systems. I wouldn't really call myself a fan of any particular system. In theory Linux is free. But in practice for an up-to-date version a person needs CDs. In theory Windows is not free. But in practice its price is worked into the cost of the box, making it essentially free so to speak. (Most of us have to pay extra over-and-above the cost of the box to switch to another OS.)

I have Fedora running on one machine. It's pretty good although I'm missing some critical drivers to fully utilize the hardware. XP is really quite good too. The biggest problem I had with Microsoft was, I used to BUY software to run on one of their systems (e.g. W95) that would stop working on another system (e.g. W98). But I see most of my older programs can run on XP. In contrast, none of the programs I bought like Flash run on Linux. So I'll always need Windows.

I have a linux called Malibu Stacey :)

She's my boyfriend's and he uses her as a bot, so we don't generally *use* her for anything as such. I dont' know about the third thing you asked, the distro? No idea. I'm computer illiterate :)
What are you talking about? Linux is a computer program lol not a doll.

Im PRO anything that isn't microsoft. ;) never tried linux, but I hear it's great.
Not only is it great, it's free, stable, has free software and comes with everything you'll ever need.

Linux is free in practice too, although there are those (like SuSe) who sell boxed versions which come with manuals, guides etc.

I know exactly what you mean about Windows' incompatibility will older software. It's Microsoft's way of making extra money. For this reason (along with hundreds of others) I favor Windows 98SE and DOS above all the others and I have both on seperate computers.

I've never been much of a fan of flash. It can do neat stuff, but it always annoyed me how your whole project would mess up if you went back and changed an earlier frame (in making a flash project). Not only that, but those flash ads are HUGE and waste a lot of my bandwidth.

I certainly don't miss Flash when I use Linux, though you can probably emulate it using Wine.

I have:
  • Xandros OS3
  • Lindows LiveCD
  • Lycoris Desktop/LX
  • Smoothwall Express 2.0
  • Knoppix 3.3
  • Red Hat Linux 6
  • SuSe 8.1
  • SuSe 9.1 LiveCD
  • Solaris 10 (which is actually Unix, but they're similar)
  • Fedora Core 4
  • Ubuntu 5.04
Of those, I've used Lindows, Lycoris, Knoppix, Red Hat, Suse 9.1 (8.1 didn't work on my PC) and Ubuntu.

Too slack for the rest ;)

hey everyone,
I am curently running suse 10 and damn small linux. I change hardwear and distros like some people change underwear. I want to build a mini-itx laptop next or a solaris box. I don't plan on buying a microsuck winblows product untill Bill Gates does two things 1. Perfects and or makes windows open source 2. Stomps out all the linux distros and make everything close source. I have been useing linux for a year now
I love it! Everything I want to do, I do with linux. It was been a huge learning experince for me but it is fun! (Dyslexia and progaming really don't mix to well) All I can do is check email, surf the web, and build stuff like Mythtv. I am now starting to understand the file system (tar files get me) I do have flash and java running with out any problems and xmms for playing wma files. My wife says the problem with her computer is the moron that created the os (win98), The problem with my computer is the moron staring at the screen. -Bent

I find Gentoo awesome because I can tweak all the things I want. Also, I have enormous choice on what applications I install. When my X breaks down(update, kernel, etc), I have a line-up of Console programs that replicate my GUI functionality. Personally, I think Linux is about choice. The choice to isntall whatever you want wherever you want.

Although my pro-Gentoo argument cannot stand againt a slacker...

Guys,
How do you feel about slackwear? It is created by a cult called church of the sub genius. I won't use it. -Bent
Well, considering the Church of the Sub-Genius is a mock religion (not a cult, that's evident from reading background information on them), it doesn't concern me too much. I actually find them pretty hilarious, to tell the truth. And as far as I know, Slackware has no affiliation with them anyway, aside from the name.

The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck will be the day they make vacuum cleaners.

I have used Linspire 5.0 and Xandros 3.0 but I would favor Xandros over Linspire--Linspire sucks as much as windows does. I did like Xandros 3 but you can not tweak your display enough to read like this forum. They are all to blurry for me even with the video card set at high resolution. I suppose maybe in the next 5 years I will have an all Linux system because I am fed up with M$ garbage and getting ripped off by these greedy guts.

I hope Linux puts M$ out of buisness as far as I am concerned. But I am just not knowledgeable enough with Linux yet. But I am ready for a GOOD operating system that actually works right.

I hear ya. That's exactly how it is with me. What annoys me the most are the Micro$oft fanboys that devote themselves to Gates.

A friend of mine once went to my school's Head of the Technology Department, asking him to switch the school's computers from Internet Explorer to Firefox. He got a detention.

It doesn't take rocket science to know how useless Internet Explorer is. I understand why some would want to stick to Windows, but unless you're not connected to the internet, DITCH INTERNET EXPLORER!.

Here're some great, free alternatives:
* Mozilla Firefox (also works on Linux ;) )
* Opera
I can't post links yet so Google for them ;)
Both browsers are free and work great. I currently use both (Opera on WinXP and Firefox for Linux).

Let alone that internet explorer is a security hazard (I have it blocked by my firewall). Also in a windows system after 95 there is no way of removing it from explorer (just go into my computer and change the adress to "about:blank")
