  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Light Reading

I will have some time coming up when I can relax and get into a good book, which I just love to do. Lately , my reading time has been filled with apologetics, apologetics and more apologetics. I'd like to get into a nice 'thumping good read', only written by a Catholic author. I am really not into the apocolyptic novel (O'Brien, McFarlen,Jenkins).

Some of the novels I have read include:
Graham Green
Evelyn Waugh
Saltzman
O'Connor
McInerny

The 'review' board is mainly discussing films and bands, so I thought I'd post here to get some Catholic advice.

What have you been doing for light (reading by Catholic authors, about the Catholic way of life) these days?

My light reading consists of a Catholic parenting book, a Catholic Home Study Service course, and some magazines. One of my favorite "light reads" of all time, though, is "Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast" by Bill Richardson. It is quite hilarious. :) The "BBBB Pillow Book" is an excellent sequel.

To Patience:

I LOVE "Catholic Digest" magazine! I subscribe to it, and I give it to an ever-growing list of people at Christmas, even some NON-Catholics! For a while, I also belonged to the Catholic Digest book club, which is partly how I compiled my library of reference materials; their Club Selections also include good fiction.

Peace be with you,

Try visiting www.ignatiuspress.com (I don't know if that will come up as a link or not) I have a catalog of theirs here, and there are some novels and also lives of the saints.

One of the novels they have that I want...when I can afford it, is The Joyful Beggar by Louis de Wohl. It's a based on the life of St. Francis of Assisi.

There's also The Chronicles of Narnia. I got the complete set in one volume at an affordable price from www.Christianbooks.com. To buy them separately would be quite expensive.

There's also another site to check out. www.neumannpress.com. They have some novels. They also have alot for children.

Happy Reading! :)

Patience,

I very much like your idea of light reading. If that is your idea of light reading, then I'd strongly suggest Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter, for which she won the 1929 Nobel prize for Literature. Also, her Master of Hestvikken, which is far better in my humble opinion, and even more Catholic.

Then there is Henry Sienkievich's Quo Vadis, Diary of a Country Priest by Bernanos, Till We Have Faces and the Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. Also, War in Heaven by Charles Williams. The last three are non-Catholics with an essentially Catholic message.

If you enjoyed the Chronicles of Narnia, you might poke your nose into the writings of George MacDonald, C.S. Lewis' literary mentor. He has a number of novels for young people which Bethany House put out. I got them for my daughter, but enjoyed them and profitted from them myself. These are not of great literary quality, but he usually has a good story and some wonderful, even stunning insights. Again, MacDonald is not Catholic, but the message is fully in accord with the faith.

If you haven't read Thomas Merton's autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain and its sequel, The Sign of Jonas, you're really missing out. It is the story of how a well educated young man finds his way into the Church, and then into a Trappist Monastery. The sequel has to do with his life in the monastery.

Also, read the Cure of Ars by the Abbe Trochu, the bio of St. John Vianney. This is a huge book, very well writtten and dramatic, one of the few full length bios of a modern saint that we have.

Another worthwhile priestly bio, also an autobiography, is that of Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J., who grew up in Shenandoah PA (my wife knew his family, since she is from there also)joined the Jesuits, was sent to Rome to study for eventual work in Russia, was posted to Poland, and was swept into Russia by the Soviet Army, where he spent many years in concentration camps in Russia, ministering to the prisoners. An incredible story.

You've got to read Story of a Soul by St. Therese, Isabella (the story of Queeen Isabella of Spain) by William Thomas Very inspiring.

But why go on, that's your whole summer right there! And don't forget Mr. Blue by Myles Connelly.

I love George MacDonald's novels!!!! They're very inspiring. :)

How about Joseph Girzone and the "Joshua" novels???

VOW - I'd love to have any back issues on Catholic Digest that you would be willing to spare :D I read them when I go to our family doctor - he's a wonderful man - has this huge STOP abortion sign right when you walk in the foyer and the local parish schedule hanging on the door (and his parish calendar in each exam room). :D

We can probably work something out. I'm thinking I want them back when you are done... but I won't charge you rent if you keep them a while, LOL.

I give Catholic Digest to a whole list of people now. seven subscriptions, plus one for me. EVERYONE raves about it. One friend didn't even let her MOTHER know she got the magazine, and mom LIVES with them. She very secretly hoards it in her room, and saves it for those few quiet moments she can steal away from the rest of the family.

LOL, I've also been told by several that the articles are perfect "bathroom reading" size!

Drop me an email, Lily!

Peace and sharing!

2. Catholic for a Reason: Hahn and others
3. Medjagori ..something (typo)

I love Stephen Rays writting style. Lots of detailed footnotes.

Lily, I love the Joshua novels! There's a "Joshua" movie out, but it's not playing here yet. I've been wondering if anyone has seen it. I saw the trailer, and that looked good.

Have been away from the computer for a breather and was surprised to see all the posts to this thread!!!! Great suggestions, people! My 'light reading' tastes are actually not that light,I guess. The suggestion which appealed to me was the 7 story mountain which I have in my bookcase and am about to dig out in the morning. I went to Amazon to check out the Norwegian novels, and the story lines seem to be like the George MacDonald novels which I have read.(judging a book by its cover and its readers'reviews)

If anyone is into mysteries, try the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters....the PBS videos are quite fine also.I got them at my local library. The books on tape are great while driving.

As for digests, I have to read the entire book in order to be satisfied. If I read an abridged version I feel I have missed an important section of the book and feel cheated,.

One secular book which I really enjoyed and it is truly LIGHT reading is A Walk In The Woods by Bill Bryson...I highly recommend it if you need an escape from city life .It'll have you ROFLOL!!!!
