Ok, I was inspired by a thread I read about coming to talk to fellow sda's and getting bashed upon.

So, I decided to start a thread for light hearted conversation. A place we can laugh at eachother and the adventist culture we live in.

Like if your an adventist, 9 times out of 10 you will know what a haystack is. But the "poor outside" world has not a clue! Its so funny! We have our own inuendo (not sure on the spellling).

I want this to be a place where we can talk about the uniqueness of our church and culture and to laugh about it and have fun. Absolutely no bashing! This is a safe harbor!!!

I know this can work. Lets be an example that we are loving fun people, and not fighting and arguing all the time about doctrine!

Love to all! :groupray:

Thats so funny! Where is como park? were you camping or just they playing? He was some stranger who enjoyed your singing and wanted to join in? Did i read that right? Ha, thats funny!

I know we have had church campouts at the lake and a whole mess of us will be out there and we will be sitting around sabbath afternoon and have a song service, but people dont know that, and they will be walking by either doing...1) staring at us like we are strange
or 2.) not make eye contact with us and walk by real fast! haha so funny! ^_^

Lol, what is a 'haystack'??? Is it an American thing?

One little quirck I love about the Adventist church is our tendency to embarass people!! This doesn't happen much anymore, but I remember back in the day (lol) whenever there were visitors to the church, they were asked to stand and introduce themselves in the middle of divine hour!!! And if they didn't stand up, everyone would turn and look at them because everyone knew who was and who wasn't regular members!!

The "stranger" was a friend of my cousin who was coming to church at the time. As I recall (very hazy memory) this was a Sabbath afternoon activity. Como Park is in St. Paul, MN--they have a zoo, horitcultural gardens and lake (very pleasant surroundings).

Chili on Fritos with cheese on top!

Haystacks where we are from is a little more than that. we call what you described "frito pie". What we call haystacks is fritos, beans (usually pinto, but chili works good to), cheese, lettuce, tomato, black olives, onion, salsa and sour cream.

Thats funny, maybe its a southern american thing? Jon, do you know what i am talking about now? do you not eat that in england? isnt that where your from?

ok switching topics now...thats funny about standing up. we went to a church once in washington d.c., it was whitly phipps church, anyways, we were like the only white people in the place and they asked all the visitors to stand up so they could ask where everyone was from. It was so obvious, we had to stand up, no way getting out of that one! haha we definetly stood out! haha

haystack is soooooooooo good :) I want to go on a church picnic or something. We used to have haystack in Argentina when we went on picnics with our midweek english bible study group. Our Pastor was originally from Germany (and they have it there)... he also worked in South Africa... and they had it there too... (But in Argentina they are just getting to know THE SDA food ;)) :D Its sooo good!! YUM... !!

...if I have to go on about something funny about being a YOUNG sda, mmmm ppl asking me... "SO WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?" haha (coz they cant understand I dont go clubing and stuff)... And they dont realise I have so much fun all the time :D... But I love that question, makes me feel like a weirdo (But I gotta confess I kinda like it!) :D hehe

...oh, and theres the "pathfinders" always having to explain "its like boy scouts or girl scouts" hehe

...There are so many things really!

I forgot about the other ingredients--I like my food simple. I first ran into them at Apple Valley in Berrien Springs, MI while I was at Andrews.

Yup, good old England lol. I've heard of a haystack because I used to have some South African friends that attended our church - but I've never tried it! What's a 'frito'??!

I guess the most popular thing we always have at potluck is my Aunt Valerie's Pumpkin Soup! Absolutely brilliant!

My friends from SNSW who go to big camp tell me about the strange looks they get when they tell people where they're staying. The campground is set up opposite the psyciatric hospital, so when they go out as a group in the evenings they get asked where they're from and when they mention the place of the camp, the first thing that comes to people's mind is the psychiatric hospital. hehe...

I also love how you can go to just about any Adventist church and at least know one person who knows someone you do. Its a really small world out there!!! It feels so much more like family than most of the non Adventist churches I've been to. But on the flip side to that, I think we also have to make sure we don't make those who are new feel left out.

Oz must be strange because half the non-Adventist population also know about haystacks and have it, particularly during summer. And we usually add beetroot to it as well, you can't have a salad without beetroot!

One unique thing about Adventists that really struck me as odd when I went to college was engagement watches. I grew up in the church and even went to Adventist elementary schools for a few years, but I had never heard of an engagement watch until college.
