CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There has been some investigation of the alpha constant which is dependent on gravity and elecrtomagnetic forces which indicates there may be changes over time. This would affect the bonding forces in atoms and molecules.
Maybe some where out there the variation has produced some different molecules

Would silicon based life not make it even more fragile than it already is. This would change the whole scope of Organic Chem class...

that small change is a VERY small one. we aren't talking big enough to make silicon a feaible substitute for carbon.fungle said:

I read something about this a few years ago but cannot remeber exactly where. This article basically said life would be very "breakable" as in a glass state and simply would not work. Blood vesels would become rigid etc. etc...

That's not really the major issue. Silicon simply doesn't exist in the same quantities as carbon. Really life could probably use silicon (some undersea bacteria do) but carbon is so much more abundant that it would be ridiculous to accept 2nd best when you have to scrabble for it.Jet Black said:

oh it could be that some lifeforms use alot more silicon, bu I dunno really. I geuss I might be a bit biased, since I only know of one type of life, an I am it

If we assume that such a silicon-base life forms exists only in conditions similar to earth, then I guess it would be unlikely. Silicon can easily be turned into silicate, which is quite unreactive, so it would be pretty hard for life to be built upon silicon.
