While I detest this guy for killing and injuring all those people, I detest the US sentencing laws more. All those mandatory minimums and sentences that span several centuries (plus life) are ridiculous, senseless and inhumane.

This isn't some monster that killed dozens of people, that raped or tortured its way through several states. He did a horrible thing and deserves to be punished for it, but this is nothing but vindictive. People can change, they can be rehabilitated and become members of society.

I don’t think you do, you want all humans dead for the good of the planet, but you’re county does, just like my country does. BTW, it was the jury that reached that decision, the judge has not signed off on it yet.

Well i meant it in general, regarding many politically charged / charging cases.
I don't investigate all of them.
At a certain point you get the suspicion that many cases are rigged for 'higher' purpose.
I'm not even sure if it's sloppiness or blatancy of the behind the scenes perps.
It sometimes seems it's a part of their 'religion' to give themselves away a little.
Has to do with karma, i think.
But that's speculation.

He gets to live. His victim doesn't. No one forced him to run anyone over with his car, or drive his car into a crowd of people. I don't think this is a bad case of a life sentence.

Let him change if he want's to change, this society has little use for him.

The judge could reduce the sentence, but can't increase it. I suspect he'll follow the jury's recommendation. Fields could still be tried in federal court for federal hate crimes. Which could carry a death sentence. But I don't think that's necessary. The state jury sent a pretty clear message.

Leaving the scene when you've hit someone with a vehicle is illegal weather you meant to hit that person or not.

Generally when people hit and run it is because they intend to evade consequences.

The idea that it would be legal to leave the scene after a murder with a vehicle and not legal to leave after an accident is ludicrous.

Here's a cite to the Virginia law about leaving the scene of an accident. You need to provide me with the cite showing it's illegal to leave the scene of a murder. Or a rape. Or an arson. Or a jaywalking. Or any other intentional act.
