Make sure everyone, including yourself, in the household is treated. Even if you dont have it, dont take chances and get treated.... those are busy buggers and totally non discriminating. Kids are easy targets for infestations.

I think they do grow out of it. It is really a problem of primary school age - even though they can affect everyone.

There's a particular age of girls - 7 or 8 - when they can be very hard to avoid if they are in the school. The kind of games they play...

I have five kids - my teenage boys are unaffected. My nine year old DD was terrible a couple of years ago but now she is fine; my seven-year old needs constant combing, and my four year old gets the occasional one.

The important thing is not to be complacent. Get into a weekly (more often during infestations) combing routine with a decent comb (I use a Nitty Gritty).

When I say combing, I mean getting the kids in the bath and washing their hair, then using lashings of conditioners, and combing the conditioner out.

There is a nit comb on the market that zaps the lice too. I'm told it's extremely effective but I've never actually tried it. Paranoid.

I'm not sure, but I think I've seen this at Walgreens.. I saw the package but didn't read it really, because it was 30 bucks, and we didn't have that at the time.. But it was some kind of electronic looking comb.
I have to go there tomorrow to get some more spray for the mattresses and the couches..ect.. so I'll look at that.. I also saw some lice or egg/nit repelent, that you can spray in there hair, I think it said every day, so I'm going to read that bottle again..

That is so true.. I've found myself saying.. I'm going to do your hair as soon as you guys get home from school, then before you know it.. They've done their homework, ate dinner, and played or whatever, then it was time for bed.. So I actually could be causing the problem, by not being as consistent as I should be..
But I've learned my lesson already with that... IT IS SUCH A PAIN!!

I had to take my daughter to the dr this past Friday for a ear infection.. and I asked him about the lice shampoo's at the store, and he said they were pretty effective..I also asked him about lice shampoo with a prescription and he said that they very rarely write them out because they are very flammible! So if they are around a open flame.. Their hair could blow up! How scary is that thought.

Someone said that using conditioner on their hair can help - does that mean that can help prevent lice? My daughter has very long hair and I use Pantene conditioner on it every day, so it is very smooth and slippery. Can that help prevent the eggs from attaching?




P.S. Does this subject cause anyone else to experience sudden onset of itchy scalp?

I read that in this thread about the conditioner too... Its just that the nits are so glued onto their hair, I havent found that it worked on my girls hair anyway...

AND yes.. everytime I even think about the lice now, my head itches, although I've been checked numerous times, so its like in my head to scratch!
